1997 Rodeo-Transmission

Hello all,
This has been a great vehicle (short of the R & R of the starter, lol), but since I have owned it, I have noticed some weird things happening with the tranny. It is an Automatic, 4wd with the 3.2L engine and the S modelm not LS.
Anyway, when cold, it seems to take too long, I think to change gears, like from 1st to 2nd, so on. It will reach around 2800 to 3200 RPM before it changes, when cold. When it is warm, it seems to shift to early, like around 1500RPM. Does this sound like an adjustment issue, or low fluid? A sensor? Oh yeah, how do I check the fluid on the tranny?

Another thing, if you are sitting, in park with it running, I cannot get the thing to hold a steady rPM. If I go to like 1500, it will keep climbing, then I'll let off a little and it will go to nothing. I know, why is this idiot sitting in the driveway revving his engine right? The reason I know this, is because one day I was using the cruise control on a flat surface, go 65mph, and it kept going up and down, 65,66,67,65,64,67....so on, so forth.
Is there something with the throttle body that might be causing this, or again, a sensor?

One more thing. The rearend (at least I think that is where it is coming from) makes a strange noise. Picture a piece of metal, sitting on a table and slowly moving, making this strange noise. that is the only way I cna describe it. It's not a metal grinding noise, it just sounds like a sliding noise. Weird? I know.

2. when was the last time you changed the rear end oil?

I have never had it flushed. I have read that it;s not a good idea to have that done, because of the sensors inside, and perhaps getting metal shavings mixec up in there. Is that true?
Also, never had the rear end changed either.
I have only had this for about 10,000 miles, I bought it with 94,000 on it. The guy I bought it from was the original owner and did regular maintenance on it, I can only assume that he had that done.

Was there any resolution to the intermittent rear ABS and brake light story?
I have the same issue, occasionally.

My history on Isuzu's:

I have owned a 2000 Amigo from new. Starting in 1998, I started my research and hit up the message board daily for input. In 2001 I met up with 75 other owners in Moab to go offroad (not in my 2wd, Amigo).

If you do not have the history on the truck other then the word of the previous owner I would start doing all of the normal fluid swaps just for preventive maintance.

Most places these days will typically just tap into the ATF cooler lines, run the truck, pump fresh ATF in with a pressurized resevoir, while the old stuff pumps out of the cooler line. It's not really a 'flush', its more like an ATF transfusion. Dont go for any of the services that call for a back/reverse flush, or where they pump a cleaner thru the AT.

Yes, they do. A little tight though. I'm curious, did you ever own an older Rodeo, like 1997 model or older? I'm just wondering if the newer ones are as good as the old ones are.
