Ok 98 lumina 3.1 stalls won't restart till sits for a while. Got info from coslacker about primary power and ground wires. found loose nut at starter and very corroded ground at block. cleaned and tightened both. Seemed to help at first now it doesn't cycle the fuel pump over and over and the guages don't go haywire when it stalls but at first it would only stall when i turned left. then it just stalled then wouldn't start. Sounded like it wasn't getting any gas. checked fuel pressure test port barely any pressure changed filter (was filthy). no change. had the ignition on then heard a bunch of clicking then the fuel gauge went from full to half and the car started again but ran like crap then stalled. could the fuel pump have anythin to do with my supposed electrical problems?

Origninal post.
ok 98 lumina 3.1. It all started when i took it for a drive and it stalled out on me after like a block. Now after it stalls sometimes it will start back up and sometimes it needs to sit for a while then other times overnight. After it sets it starts no problem. After it stalls if you turn the key on the fuel gauge goes to empty and the fuel pump keeps cycling on about every 7 seconds. When the fuel pump kicks on the lights in the dash flash. It keeps doing this while the key is on oh and the fan relays try to kick on every time the fuel pump relay does. I have no clue where to go with this any ideas?

Sure there is any gas in it?

at least half a tank for sure

Hmmmm. I can't remember if it was you I suggested it to, but did you try shaking all the wiring harnesses with the key on, and see if you get a reaction from the relays or anything?
I'm stumped, somewhat. There is a ground strap on the fuel tank, check it. Try swapping the fuel pump relay with one in there that has the same part number.

correct me if i'm wrong, but if fuel filter gets really dirty, and almost plugged, can that damage the fuel pump? could the pump be on its last leg? Just my two cents worth. Not sure about the guages. Sounds maybe computer related. Very strange problem. Good luck with it

I've heard it said that a fuel pump that is badly worn will come unglued after a restriction (bad filter) is removed. It is possible, I'm not sure I can validate that, but it makes some sense that after pushing against a restriction for a long time, free running might make sloppy parts fly apart, like the difference in running a worn out motor at high RPM in nuetral and in gear. The load holds worn parts together. You can drive a motor with a rod rattle all day long at 2500 RPM without making it worse. Put it in nuetral and run it at that speed and watch out for flying parts.

BTW, I've gathered that after '97 GM had a fuel pump control module, or something like that? I've heard it referenced on other threads, but I'm not familiar with it. Does someone think this might be the problem here?

Yes you did suggest the wiring to me and i have been thru all that to no avail. I am pretty sure the fuel pump was on it's last leg anyway i guess what i am trying to figure out is whether or not it had anything to do with my electrical problems or if it was just some freak coincidence. As for the fuel pump control module i've never heard of it (which doesn't mean it is not there) and alldata makes no mention of it. A normal fuel pump problem isn't that hard to diagnose but this car was doing so many strange things at once i really had no idea where to go first. Anyway i am going to put a fuel pump in it possibly today so we'll see what happens. Thanks for the help.

I think I'd pull the connector apart back at the pump and make sure there is signal/power to it, before going to the trouble and cost of a pump (non-returnable), but if the car is older or high mileage, it's gonna need it someday anyway, so whatever. Good luck, hope you find the problem.

Ok had the pump out to test it works fine but now no power to the pump thru vehicle harness. nothing coming from pcm to turn on relay so in the process of checking on a pcm

Turned out the pcm cured everything.
