Mirror Question

I was wondering if it is possible to add the rear view mirror with the compass/temp and the side mirrors with the directional to an 04 Silverado 1500 if it didn't come with them. If so, can they be installed with little or no problem?

Yes I have a 99 and have added the rearview mirror. I purchased it off Ebay the wiring is up above the headliner. I had to run the wires for the temp sensor but other than that it all works great.

Did you have to rip your head liner down at all or is it right there? Also, do you know about the side mirrors?

Greetings Cahill,

I can't tell you about the interior rearview mirror - but I can tell you about the outside rear view mirrors. In my 2004 - it was on the dealer lot with the power/heated mirrors. But I wanted the directional mirrors that also had the power down/curb view AND the automatic diming on the driver's side. So as part of the negotiation - the dealership swapped the ones on the truck - for the ones I desired.

Here was the important thing. In order for it to happen - I had to have the added controls on the steering wheel (which I did have). They told me if the steering wheel controls weren't present - that it couldn't be done normally.

I love the fact my driver's side mirror dims automatically - in combination with my interior mirror - it makes night driving a piece of cake when considering headlights from behind. And the curb view/power fold/directional/heated mirrors is worth every penny it cost me. By the way - the dealership had them switched in less than an hour - so it must be a pretty simple process.

Thanks for the info, White Lightening. I'll have to check into getting a steering wheel too.

Greetings Cahill,

My understanding is that the controls built into the steering wheel (to operate the Driver Informtion Center) - indicate the wiring needed to operate the mirrors and program the DIC.

You mentioned you have a 2004. I know the work truck and a couple others don't have the DIC - but most models do. If you have DIC - then your steering wheel should already have the controls - and if you had power mirrors originally - then it sounds like you have the wiring needed. If you didn't have the power mirrors originally - or didn't have the DIC, or didn't have the steering wheel controls - my guess is those power/directional/heated/auto diming/tilt down mirrors would be a complex retrofit. If you had those three conditions there as listed above - it should be a really easy retrofit.

I have power mirrors now, just don't have the DIC. I'll guess I'll have to check with my dealer to be sure. I was just trying to avoid them. Thanks again.

I just installed the interior rear view with temp/compass and auto dim. Very easy to install and everything works great except for the temp. It reads "OC". Does anyone know where the temp sensor is located, and what it looks like, so I can see if my truck has one and may need programming or if I have to buy one? And, any approximate costs?

The OC on the mirror stands for open circut. The temp sensor is located behind the grille. Mine is located on the drivers side .

Good Luck

Do you know what it looks like? I have something with a green connector sitting between the grill and the radiator. It is on the drivers side.

The wires to make the directional mirrors work is prety easy. You do have to take off the door panels but the rest is easy. I added the directional and added the DIM to the drivers side, I have the center dim already. :icon16:

Good Luck
