question about leather redying

I checked out a shop that does leather redying, and the way they do it was that they mask everything off, and actually sand the leather (yes, with a random orbital sander!) down smooth while it's still on the seat, and then paint it with a spray gun! Is that the usual way of redying and/or restoring leather? The end result looked pretty good (nearly new actually) but I still can't get over the fact that they put paint on the leather. I can't imagine that being good for it?
PS wasn't sure if this would receive better replies in the detailing forum or the interior forum... hmm

Wello first off, if they do this the correct way, its not actually paint. Its a dye. The dye is chemically formulated to react with the vinyl and restore/change its color. So you might want to ask the guy first, if he says that they actually do use PAINT to spray the seats, stay as far away as possible.
