Error codes for '87 Mr2

I am having a problem where, on ocasion, when i start the car the check engine light comes on. I was wanting to know how to check the error codes. I know i am supposed to jump something in the diognosis block, but i am not sure which to jump. I was tol TE1 and E1, but the 87 mr2 does not have a TE1. Any help as soon as possible would be greatly appriceated.
