You must join the DOHC side. Since I had a vtec swap in a car that wasn't supposed to have vtec, I wasn't impressed, 'cause then you gotta get something to control your vtec, and then you sit there the whole time wondering if it's actually working.
I had the mini-me swap (as you know) and I had the VAFC, and I didn't notice a damn difference weither I had it hooked up or not. So as bambam would say, fu<k vtec! unless it came with the car.
PLUS you will still spend all this money rebuilding that motor (which you should do because you'd be dumb to just throw the motor in like i did) and when you do all that work you will not be happy. There will always be that damn DOHC civic that barely beats you.
JOIN THE DOHC SIDE!
(plus torque is fun!)

I dont know if your talking about the mini me, but any dohc vtec engine, you will def. know when it engages!!! But def id say go for the ls. Its a great start! plus more upgradability and torque. Id say talk to bammed89lx. He seems to have an extensive knowlege of dohc non-vtec engines!

Dude im working on a project right now..b18b (LS) block and 98 GSR head.. but you know what it gets sickning wit urry1 saying join the dohc side.. dude im not gonna sit here hate and i aint gonna lie bout shiit but my sohc has no problem smoking these b16/b18 4g's around here. Dude that lil d15 vtec is gonna be a fun lil platform for u to work with and with the right ideas you will have no problems gettin on the dohc.. thats if you know how to drive. we get some huge gatherings of up to 300 street racers in Philly and its a draw some nights with the sohc dohc.. its all how you build them up and u gotta do ur research and come up with some combinations that go hand in hand.. turbo that lil sohc!! u wont regret it man :) dont get me wrong either i get my a$$ handed to me by dohc just as much. its all about the tuning the right parts u buy and ur driving skillz
have fun wit that short stroke motor that u can pick up wit 1 hand ;) \\//peace

If i get the Si hatch that i want i wanna get an LS for it. My friend swapped his LS for B16 which i think was pretty dumb bc he lost alot of torque and his car became slower, but hes having fun with it and he loves VTEC (which is mainly why he did it). I wanna get a B18B with B18a cable tranny with some aftermarket parts in it, and eventually go turbo. Gotta love the boost. Plus IMO LS is the best bang for the buck motor wise.

Plus alot of people get scared when they hear VTEC or theyll talk shit. Thats one reason I dont want VTEC.

he didnt lose any torque.. those b18's (ls) have some sheety geared transmissions.. u got the right idea man with fuel management and some odds n ends u can definately have yourself a 11 sec turbo ls!!

no he lost torque dude seriously, his car got slower lol. But with some mods he got a lil faster than with the LS. Now he has a CTR crank pulley, a ___________ intake manifold (cant rmember name but its really nice and high flow), and he got a FPR and some other stuff. He also has toggle VTEC which helps alot.

yeah im running my mouth and aint paying any attention lol i thought u saying he put a ls in place of the b16, Yeah and i feel ya wit the vtec stuff.. im not some big vtec fan myself, i threw z6 head on my a6 block and felt some results, results i was satisfied with. and the b18 turbo ls wasnt gonna be vtec till my friend crashed his gsr and gave me his head for free. my friends get into the battle of the non/vtec wars all the time, i sit back and laugh. I once had a 93 prelude with a h23 and a few bolt ons and it had some balls man and was smoking h22's here and there. then i hydrolocked that motor and got the h22 swapped in and it didnt feel right to me. oh well everyone has there preference.

I agree, DO NOT get the b18a cable tranny, you need to get the ys1 with lsd like I need to.
Even with my bfg kdw's I still loose traction like a bitch AND the gearing sucks ass!
Plus if you go turbo, you gotta have the lsd!

aagh yeah I guess I really do belong on the DOHC side..lol. I could have the D in so much faster though..it's gonna take me months to get all this B shit together and then put it in..and I need to be saving my money for next year because me and my g/f are moving to go to college together..so I shouldn't even be messing around with a swap now.lol.
But then again I've never been a big fan of the vtec..never rode in or driver a dohc vtec car and the sohc ones i've been in i couldn't feel anything..so I guess I'll just get the b18b block and start building it.

if you want a faster engine out of the box - go B
if you want a challenge - go D
For the price of a B-swap you could get a D16Y8 and mod it and start saving up for a nice turbo kit, build up internals, etc.

Just stick with the D dude and give it some balls! cam, cam gear, pulleys, lightweight flywheel, stage 1 or 2 clutch and si tranny...
Sure I get waxed by dohc vtec cars sometimes but usually I'm not paying attention when they're wanting to race or the mrs. is in the car and she's like "no no no" and I'm like "ugh!".... but there is no greater feeling than handing some vtec boi-racer his mo-fo ass!

SOHC PGM-Fi

so I'de be spending about 700-1000 extra dollars for all the extra b swap crap you need..just for about 10 hp and 10 ft lbs? :/

i'm not going to read anybody's opinion because the only 1 that matters is mine :evillol:
the only thing a b18 is good for is to either add b16 head for more power or have the intent of swapping it out for better b series.
why is that my opinion? the b18 is very close in stats compared to the z6, y8, and zc. if you plan on dropping in an engine and be done with it (you're not looking for more hp) then go for the sohc vtec. aftermarket and maintance parts will be cheaper....you'll save over the years.
on the flip side, if you are after speed. don't bother with the sohc vtec. the b18 is an excellent foundation for all kinds of b series possibilities.
this is merely my opinion based on owning both his b16 and my y8.
him: i need a clutch & header
me: thats your b series problem
him: i only paid $800 shipped for my engine
me: me too. now what did you pay for the rest of it?
him: but you have a dc header and stage 2 clutch
me: and i still have less invested :evillol:
that conversation happened yesterday.
his b16 with worn stock clutch and no aftermarket header still spanks my y8. but thats okay with me, i got my engine, header, and clutch for $1400.
it always boils down to what are you after???
i rule at left handed typing :icon16:

well I am after more speed but I also have a budget to consider..I mean I like the idea of a b18 just all the extra crap I have to get for it like mounts linkage..an obd0 ecu and dizzy..then the odds and ends like timing belt etc etc..
and btw I'm currently running a dpfi d15b non vtec (it was a carbed motor) with the glorious dx tranny..
So ladynredsi don't you think with a d15b vtec and a say crx si tranny I'de notice a pretty big difference from what i have now??

i have never owned a carbed d15 nor a d15vtec. i have owned quite a few dx's and a std. people think the big difference between dx & si is the engine. it isn't. it's the MPFI. you don't feel vtec as much in a sohc as the dohc. it's not going to throw your head back in your seat all F&F NOS style. however, i think the combination of MPFI, vtec, & si tranny will produce a gain you will notice.
if your bottom line is after speed, don't bother with the sohc. let me put it this way....i can get him off the line with my basic bolt on's, as soon as i have to shift he goes flying by holding 1st gear.

hmm well i guess the best choice for me is really to do a ls swap. For now..I'll just get the long block with my tax return and pick up everything else as soon as I can.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I don't really have friends who are to car savvy so it's nice to be able to come on AF and bitch about my car questions. :)

I'm sure you were all waiting for this...
Go DOHC....
Better yet, get a B20....
Same price...more torque.
with the b18 or b20, you got more possibilities in the end...vtec head, high compression, turbo, etc...and it will make more power than that sohc.
Yes, it WILL cost more.
As for the sohc vtec...you shouldn't even take into consideration the vtec on the sohcs. it's almost useless...vtec is only used on the intake valves. If you were to run a vafc and disengage vtec....you'd barely notice.
A B18...especially the b20 has a crap load more torque than any of the sohcs. it's not all about peak torque or horsepower either...it's about the power curve. For example, a stock b20 will have more torque at idle than any sohc will have at any point in it's curve...and a b18 is comparable.
it's especially true on our light 4g's....they love the torque pullin' 'em off the line.
it's true...look up some stock dyno's on HT.
The only benefit of the sohc vtec is if you would want to do minimal mods and keep it a street car only...because in the end...no matter what, you will have to at least upgrade to the Bseries if you ever plan on being fast...you just can't do it on the sohc vtec..it'll blow before anything good happens....there are too many weak parts namely the rods and valvetrain. you'll spend just as much money trying to build it for turbo or all motor and you'll still never be as fast as a turbo or all motor Bseries.
i'd say at least get the b18...spend the extra money now and save later. But, if all you are looking for is a little extra power to a daily driver then go for the D15.
PS...don't get the ls cable tranny...it's garbage. The only reason a dseries might have a chance of keeping up with a b18 powered crx is if that crx was using the ls cable tranny and the other crx was running an si tranny. Go for the ys1 from a 92-93 gsr or get any of the jdm crx sir (y1 w/ lsd) or integra xsi/rsi trannies (j1/s1).

I guess I don't really want to steal the thread... But it's hard to get someone to reply with knowledge in the other forum... Would it be beneficial to performance to do a b18 with the b16 v-tec head? I've heard mix inputs, but nothing from people with actual knowledge. Again, not to steal the thread, just asking a q. :D

Yeah it's not alot better but it still makes alittle more power.

I'd get a d16y8 before a d15vtec because 3hp isn't going to make that much of a difference. Plus, if you're talking longblock (including IM)... y8 supposedly has best flowing d-series IM.

a lot of people don't realize that. people think the Si block is better than Dx because of 1.5 verses 1.6. the MPFI is what makes the difference. the cam is a little different in the Si...but the big difference is the fuel injection.
the b16 is 1.6, the b18 is 1.8, i suppose one could say .2 liter big deal...unless we're talking ls/vtec, 1.6 vtec head on a 1.8 bottom. wait! let's not start the b series conversation again :icon16:
