This question is about my friend's 01 GTI VR6. After the car has been driven around and is at operating temperature, when we cut the engine off we can hear kind of a "boiling" sound coming from the engine. I don't know how else to explain it other than a hissing/boiling sound. Is this normal? What causes it?
Thanks

I'm not exactly sure on your model, but there should be an afterrun coolant pump that circulates coolant through the engine after shutdown to prevent those symptoms. It's a small pump hooked to the coolant hoses at the backside of the cylinder head. There should be a large fuse for it on a bracket by/behind the battery.

vip, i know what you are reffering to. I also hear this sound after i turn off my car, but it doesn't seem to be a problem. I have no idea what causes it, but it is also noticeable in my car.
maybe some other vw owners can contribute?

Problably is the after-run coolant pump. It keeps coolant circulating through the system to help the engine cool down properly after running it.
