So today i found a 91 SL for sale for 2500, 3000gt's have always been my "dream" car. So i pulled over to check it out. It had some body damage and sketchy paint. Which isnt a big deal cause me and my grandpa do body work, and i would put a body kit on it anyway. The interor is almost perfect, missing head rests but everything else looks super good. Its got 170k miles on it, and its an auto.
I was wondering if it is worth the 2500, and what are the possibilies/how hard would it be/how much would it cost, to put in a new motor/tranny..
Thanks for any info....

Mileage too high for my taste...umm SL engine usually go for under a $1000 on Ebay...anywhere from $400 - $1000...junkyard's I doubt you'd ever find one there. Tranny's are about the same price range as the engine's. But then putting it in is where you'd be paying a lot, unless you can do it yourself, which isn't all that difficult with a little knowledge.
As for if it's worth it...for your purposes NO...if it's your dream car do you really want to buy a POS one and try to fix it up spending all kinds of time and money being frustrated with it? Trust me you don't...especially when for another $1000 or so you could probably find one with 120K or so on it in decent condition. Don't bother with it IMO, it's a headache you could avoid. And if you're gonna say it would be a good learning experience, then i'll tell you this: learn on a car you don't care about much and something that you won't be putting all of your money into insurance for.

you doubting Thomas, you! no way, man. you can find engines, trannies, whatever at junkyards/salvage yards. check out www.car-part.com. its a database for the salvage yards in the US. i found many hard-to-find parts on there. you should have no problem finding and engine and tranny on there.

Wow Twizted, you sound a little bitter there! haha, jk man.
i say if you wanna learn how to do something (albeit car-related), there's no time like now. but also, be smart about it: if its a daily driver, don't do something that will incapacitate the cars transporting ability. and if you're not sure what ur doing, just ask us on here or a friend that knows something about cars. safety first, but don't be soo conservative that you don't take risks.

that's the story of my....car-loving-life [haha, for lack of a better word]. ya, i've always liked the 3000GT too. any chance i get, i'll pull over or go out of my way just to check it out. don't let difficulty, risk, or challenge get between you and your dream.
go get 'em tiger!!!!!!! [na, i just had to ruin the cliche, nostalgic moment. muahaha!]

Ohh yeah I forgot about that site, I found a few things on there before...I was just thinking it would be hard to find at your local junkyard. But hey if you're capable go for it, if you're not sure, just buy a good one, it'll end up cheaper that way.

So I called the guy yesterday when i went to take some pictures (ill post them tomorrow if anyone cares) and i told him i was interested and i wanted to drive it and take it by my macanic (I cant spell) to make sure all was well. He got like all offended, he continued with do you know what this is? Its a 5000 sports car, i told him the body work didnt matter i just knew it had alot of miles. I think he is hiding something, none the less im ganna drop by today and take it out for a drive im bringing my grandpa (who will pretent to be me so i dont get played) to check it all out....

If he won't let you get it checked out tell him no thanks, he's probably not going to sell it to anyone withought an inspection given the high mileage. If I were you I wouldent get it even if it is fine mechanicaly, I've seen second generation bases with lower milage go for around the same price so keep looking on autotrader and in the want ads.
