painting panels

i just wanted to know if anyone has ever tried to paint the dashboard and panels in their car. i have a 2000 civic si and wanted to use some type of car interior paint to do this. if so what are some pros and cons. thanks

well i know a lot people have done, and heard some good stories and bad.

Here are a few things:

-Take your time, dont rush things. Make sure everything has been sanded down well and cured well past the estimated time for the paint to dry.

-I have never used the new paint for plastic materials so im not sure how well it works, but always wet sand first to make sure they paint as something to grip on.

-This coats, dont want any globs... obviously.

-I havent heard of people doing clear coats, but i would suggest it to prevent scratchs.

Take Your Time, Thin Coats. Good Luck. The Pro Are Obvious, It Will Look Good If Thats What Your Goin For, But Because Spray Paint Is So Thin It Might Fade Or Begin To Scratch Off With Time Requiring You To Do It Again. Also Once You Do It You Wont Be Able To Undo It. Remember Since You Will Have To Wetsand Or Even If You Just Clean The Survace You Are Going To Paint Real Well, You Will Always Have It There.the Paint Wont Come Off, And When It Does The Survace Will Always Look Like It Was Painted Before. Good Luck Selling A Car Like This Too, A Lot Of People Do Not Like This Look, But If You Do And Are Gonna Do Then Good Luck.

i just painted all the plastci interior parts (ac vents and crap) and it turned out nice. just be sure to use Krylon spray paint. and try not to break any on the plastic pieces (i broke the pass. side ac vent so if anyone know where to get one for a 93 hb let me know please) but if you do it right it turns out good. i dont have a dig. camera so i cant take any pics but here a link i have.

Pretty much do what they said. Mikej86, before you go and spend a fortune online or in a shop, always go to a scrap yard for your car parts. You'll learn that its a car enthusiast's paradise, and everything is hella cheap. On my interior, if i didnt pop out the ac peices, i taped them off. I even tore off the carpet on my door panels, and painted that plastic peice behind it. Mind you, not all cars have plastic behind the carpet, some have fiber glass.

for some odd reason i always have to learn the hard way, and its always the most exspensive way also, a quart of oil is a whole lot less that a new engine, if ya know what i mean.

I've never done it, but a close family friend of mine restores cars. He went to a paint shop and got interior "dye." It's not paint, and apparently seeps into cloth or plastics, and colors them better then paint. I saw the results, and they looked like they came from the factory. This guy knows what he's doing, but ask a local auto paint shop if there's a difference between paint and dye. Just my two cents.
