AWD vs RWD

Ok, it's been a while since I've posted in here with anything worth talkin about.
My buddy Joe calls me up, tells me to meet me at one of our usual hang outs. I could use some coffee, so why not?
I hop in the Z, fire her up... take the long way to the freeway rather than going down my street and jumping on. So I can properly warm up the car. Gently cruise up the on-ramp and settle into a nice 70-75 cruise.
I decided now would be a good time to recalibrate my boost controller. Since my wastegate seems to being south, what used to be 12psi, is now 18-20psi. So, I got on it a few times adjusting my Blitz Boost controller to where I'd keep a constant 15psi.
Happy with my settings I hop off the freeway at my exit, just putting along in 5th. I start slowing down at the light up ahead. I pull into the right lane so I can take the 'pole position' and I notice a newer Subaru WRX wagon sitting at the light.
At first, I thought nothing of it as I was about 2 car lengths behind rolling up. But I noticed the lowered suspension and different wheels. Hmmm, maybe...
I come rolling up to the light, having to rev the motor a bit to keep her from dieing out. Making me sound like a idiot/ricer. But as I come up, and drop it into 1st gear. The light turns green, and I just gave it a bit of gas to keep it from stalling. So I just let the clutch out which just rocketed me forward.
My intentions were not to call upon myself a race. I just was lazy and didnt slip the clutch to take off like a normal person. I short shift to 2nd and then 3rd going over a rail-road crossing. That's when I notice him coming up on me hard.
I hesitate, should I stomp him now? Or just let him go. He buzzes past me with his modded exhaust and blow-off valve. I reach for the shifter to downshift to go after him seeing as it's a open road ahead of us to allow some play time. But the light ahead, short distance between the two lights, goes red. Stop, hoping he'd stop too so we can play from a dig.
I was hoping for a dig race. He keeps going, making the light. I could of gone too, but why push it?
Anywho, he gets way up ahead down the road, the street has a slight kink in it so he gets out of sight pretty quick. So when my light goes green. I do a semi-launch to go after him. Before I know it i'm cruising at 80-85 to make up time.
Three long lights later, I caught him at another red light. He's in the middle, I'm in the right lane. A '02-'03 Mustang GT in the left lane. I pull up and do my little revs of about 200-300rpm to keep it from dieing.
As the lights start to change for us, I raise the rpm to about 3,000rpm. Light goes green, I stab the gas just before I start letting the clutch out and I get a nice launch. I jump out ahead of him... I heard him screech tires leaving the line.
By the top of 2nd gear I was ahead of him, 3 cars. It's ok, he probably wasn't ready for me. Fair enough. I slip into 4th gear and I move across the lanes to the left lane so he's on my right. I drop back down to 3rd and wait for him to catch up. Wondering if he's going to do a Fly-by. By the way, the Mustang did nothing... that's fine.
He goes past me at a reasonable pace, not like a fly-by. I let him get a car length ahead and plant my foot down and reel him in. His window was partially down and I let off just as my nose was at his window. Putting my blow off valve, which resides on the passenger side of my engine compartment, right next to his ear. Letting him know that I'm not something to toy with. Unless you've got a Z06...
Ok, Continuing on.
We cruise for the rest of this stretch of the street to where I have to make my turn. He gets in the far left lane, as do I. I'm sitting behind him waiting for this long light to change so we can make our left turn.
As we can see the lights beginning to change, He revs it up and holds it pretty high. I do somewhat the same. When the light goes green he squirts off and makes the turn. I can't do the same, my suspension sucks so I have to wait till I'm pointed in the general direction to stab the gas.
I hit the straight and mash gas in 2nd gear. I quickly start to pull him in. We go right past where my buddy is hanging out and he see's me tearing up the asphault to catch this WRX. I get up next to the WRX and let off. The light ahead turns yellow... We start slowing down.
Open street, three lanes. He's in the right lane. I'm in the Left... middle lane is clear. No side traffic, no oncoming traffic. No place for police to sit and wait. Perfect.
I stage it up, he does the same. Light goes green and he lights up all four tires for a quick second. I nail a pretty damn good launch and he's ahead of me by about half a nose. I hit 2nd gear and blow past him... by the end of 2nd gear I'd gotten 2 car lengths. I hit 3rd gear and I put on another 2 car lengths... I let off at about 80mph cause it was only going to get worse for him and I could see him stop.
We start slowing down... my phone rings. I see it's my buddy calling. I answer quickly. "I"M BUSY.. I'LL TALK TO YOU IN SEC!" I can hear him laughing as I hang up. I pull up next to the Subaru at the next light, I give him a thumbs up for dickin around with me and he gives me thumbs up in return. I make for a turn lane so I can make a u-turn to get back to where I'm supposed to be.
I pull into the parking lot and my buddy Joe was clapping, first thing outta his mouth was "I heard you get that shit box!... tell me all about it!"
Ahh, fun times. But, I think I'm going to hang up the street racing. When we made that turn to continue racing. I just gunned it, I didn't even bother to chech for police... which was stupid.
My car is going to get me into alot of trouble, trouble I can't afford right now. Plus, it's highly unsafe in my car to travel those speeds with the shit brakes/suspension. Maybe it's just me growing up? Not sure if I want to continue building the Z or not... if I do. It'll mean I can just get into more trouble with it.
Cause one of these days, I'm going to get caught and it isn't going to be pretty seeing as I have a tendancy to not let off to I know for a fact I've won or I'm going to lose. Which means going full tilt through most of my gears. :nono:

That was the best part, I love it, when I meet up with friends and they mention they saw me last night fly past them after a cobra or something. I even had a friend leave me at blockbuster for 25 mins because he saw a 70s TA that he "HAD to race" Good stuff, nice race red, and please don't quit with the Z...we all have moments of clarity...but they should be forgotten.

Mr. Red, Nice kill, and I hear ya Bro. When the cars start going over the centry mark in town it scares the shit out of me, not the speed but thinking if someone pulled out in front of me or a kid running out to retrive a ball. I'd never be able to stop, and that my friend would end my life at racing. It would be the saddest day of my life and I think about it all the time, but my body can't go without meeting the challange of smoking the guy next to me.
Trust me Red, you'll never get street racing out of your blood. Some chemical reaction happens to your blood when you win your first street race, and I don't care how long you live it never returns to normal, so accept it, and keep on truckin.

What does your car run in the 1/4?
-Jayson-
02-02-2005, 08:44 PM
yes, see the problem is, Adrenaline can be addictive. And street racing gives you a ton of adrenaline. I mean im almost positive anyone on this board who street races regularily understands this adrenaline rush. Its the sound and power of two engines screaming down the road at top RPM, the anticipation of the light turning green, the screaching of the tires, and even the thrill of being caught. All this gives you such an adrenaline rush that its addictive. I mean im sure every person in here almost always drives around looking at every car on the road for a decent car or race. I mean if im sitting at the line i literally watch the headlights coming up from behind me, i can tell almost every car thats going to come up to the line just by looking at the headlights, or by seeing the tailights ahead of me. Thats kinda scary.
But good race man. And you wont give it up, you cant.

So give up street racing and take up drag racing (or track racing, or whatever you want to call it).
Spend you a little money upgrading your brakes, slap you a cage in the Z, buy a truck and trailer, and start drag racing! Simple fix.
Then you don't have to worry about a cop, or endangering an innocent person's life (just yours and whoever you're racing against-like it should be).
And you sure want have the problem of "not having a worthy race", lol.

What does your car run in the 1/4?
Who knows? It's anybodys guess. low 13s... high 12s...
0-60... shoot I dunno... low 5s to high 4s?
As for the car... I'm young enough that I could build another one, a better one. That is if I did decide to sell it and get something more 'toned down'.
We'll see, If I can land another job where I make more money. Then I can afford both... then life will be good.

But there fixing it now and hopefully will be done next week. Hell, I'll even bring my video camera so everyone here will get to see our cars in action. When's a good chance for you?

well everyone might want to cut off my balls for saying it, but i really think that its a good idea for you quitting racing. I'm a youngin myself, and I just hung it up like 3 weeks ago, and let me tell you, driving it just way more relaxed this way. I would rather put in money to making my car nicer/quicker to drive for myself rather than for insurance increases and tickets for racing. I'll still be a "spectator" to a few of course, but I like it better without the racing. Nice decision, but even I will miss your nice stories I'm afraid to say.

That's a pretty damn cool 240Z you have there redneck. Always happy to see a well-done true sports car project with some intelligence.
