Fuel gauge problem

2003 Ford Explorer fuel gauge does not show full after fill up. The Ford service stated that it can take up to 17 minutes (of running time) for the fuel gauge to show full after fill up. Does anyone else have this problem? Have you heard of this?

the problem happens when the vehicle is fueled with key in on position, your vehicle is equipped with an anti slosh module, this prevents sudden gauge movements while driving up and down hills, and on turns and so forth, if the key is left on while the vehicle is fueled, its possible that it could take 27 mins for the anti slosh module to correct the gauge, always fuel with the key off!

I have a 1997 ford eplorer and I have a smiliar problem . My fuel gage shows about a quarter more gas than what it actually has. I have to get it fixed but i dont know who fixes that

Everyone needs to report this issue to the NHTSA. If they get enough complaints about the fuel gauge, fuel sending unit and the fuel pumps in ford vehicles, perhaps a recall will be issued or a class action suit can begin. I filed my complaint at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov

Why do you think NHTSA would care if the fuel gauge is slow to show full after refueling? It's not a safety concern, it's not an issue that is going to cause an accident.

The fuel gauge not working or the fuel pump stopping to work is a safety concern. Not knowing when and where and if the vehicle will stop running is a concern...It could be in heavy traffic, on a major highway, in the middle of a deserted road, etc. Would you want your child in that car???It is a NHTSA problem.

It's not an NHTSA issue. It is an owner responsibility issue. Fordtech gave an explanation, simply turn the key off.

If Ford removed the anti-slosh model then you'd be bitching about the gauge jumping around.

Ok Larrylarr, mine was a similar problem, but mine just kept showing a full tank no matter how low my tank was. Here's what I tried as my mechanic heard about similar issues with Explorers. My mechanic told me to fill the tank, violently rock the van passenger to drivers side (rt to left or left to rt by standing on the step or rear tire and grabbing the roof rack) for about 10 sec and that would dislodge the float stuck near the top of the tank. I grabbed the roof rack rocked it and voila, it worked. Good luck
