is there a significant difference between factory made aftermarket exhaust systems and makeshift piping?

i can go to East LA and have a muffler shop bend me wider piping for $75 tops.

dont know. its just that plain piping that you see chillin on the racks at your local muffler shop... may be ceramic. i think they can do stainless steele for a little more.

did he keep the catalytic converter on? probably not if it made that sound.

i had that same shitting turtle problem when i ghetto piped my old accord (no cat). i got rid of it by putting a fat resonater right up against the end of the header. i dont know why it worked but it sounded good.

Is it just a stock KA or what?

the type of metal will have a huge effect on sound, possibly mild effects on performance and SERIOUS durability issues.. if you wanna spend $75 every few months on new exhausts cause the old ones are toast then go ahead.. and thats not even if its turbo. if you're going turbo then don't even bother.. buy a complete system or buy stainless steel for them to bend.. which will cost a lot anyways..

it will be an s14 sr20. right now its just a hypothetical car. a beautiful, awesome hypothetical car. (s14 + sr swap / $9 per hour = a goddam hell of a bitch of a lot of hours. i need to go on 'the price is right' or something so i can get rich quick.)

but thanx for the help. it will be turbo so a makeshift system wont cut it. . .

Nah that stuff works just fine. I have galvanized piping and the stuff from exhaust shops for my downpipe right now. It works. Movin up to 3" stainless pretty soon though. bling bling

Speaking of exhausts, will a stock KA with header, test pipe and GT-Spec exhaust sound good? I know it'll be damn loud, but will it sound good?

GT spec is like a N1 just bigger. It will probably sound just like the N1, but a lot louder. My IHE with gutted cat was pretty loud, but people said it sounded good.

i have mild steel 2.5" cat back with no cat, straightform the turbo back, its sounds great, its not that loud but loud of enought and has a nice grumble to it.. i would prefer 3" but 2.5 is decent for turbo car and great for n/a a 3" on a na would be loud as hell...

the apex-i gt spec is about 3.3" piping in diameter and i think the canister has a 5" tip..

GT-SPEC is great. mine has minor modifications from speed bumps, but it still sounds great. its 95mm piping and 115mm tip, so its like the size of a turbo diesel exhaust (minor exaggeration) when you look at it, but it really does sound good. Its got 2 resonators and all the welds are such high quality looking at them. A'PEXi is the shit. Only thing is, when you make a long freeway drive at 120mph..about halfway through you realize that you cant really hear anything lol. But its not as loud as i thought it would be.

And only 1 ticket for it so far. FUCK that reminds me i forgot to pay the fee. damn it.

It's 3.74 inches and can't you just stick the silencer in on long drives?

nissanfanatic
02-04-2005, 12:50 AM
Yep. Silencer makes a lot of difference too. I liked my N1 system much better after I got the silencer. But it found a new home somewhere in the garage after the turbo went on.

The silencer or the exhaust????? And doesn't the exhaust get much quiter with a turbo anyways?

nissanfanatic

I bought the silencer when I was NA. I took it out after I installed the turbo. Yea turbo makes any car much quieter. The sound leaving the exhaust system is energy being returned to the intake. Just like heat.

Ok, so if I get the GT-Spec on an NA with the silencer, it should be livable, I mean I'll be abl to carry on a conversation at idle right? lol
