Is it possible to clean my injectors?

I have a 88 Jeep Wagoneer 4L with 260K. Started smelling gas, found injectors soaked, changed o-rings. Injectors still leaking. Don't have alot of money to put into NEW injectors. Has anyone been able to clean the old ones? This is the first (of 4 Jeeps) that I've owned that had fuel injection, so I'm lost. Someone please help. :banghead:

you can clean them, I changed my o-rings on m 1993, when I remved the injectors I sprayed them with injector cleaner than put new o-rings on them. I am not sure if it will help with your leak problem though? You may want to try the junk yard, find one the you pull the parts off your self! You can get them for a few bucks that way! Good Luck

The injectors might be leaking elsewhere besides the O-Rings. Best that you get it fixed ASAP as leaky injectors are the main cause of very crispy jeeps! (FIRE!)

Five-O motorsports sells a set of 6 #19 rather cheaply.

DITTO!! Yeah, do that ASAP. Those 19# injectors will improve your mileage and performance too.

another option is to buy a set of take outs off e-Bay. You can get the same 19# injectors, they come out of ford mustangs who have upgraded to bigger injectors. They go cheap.

Thanks, guys. At least you've given me somewhere to start. I went to the website "Five-O Motorsports" and was surprized by their low prices. But I think I will try looking at the "take-outs" (per IdahoJeeper) first. Thanks again. Have a great Jeep day.

Got injectors ordered. Guess I won't have to carry the marshmellos for much longer. Five-O Motorsports did have the best prices for Bosch, but I was able to find slightly used ones on E-bay for 1/5 the price. I'll let you know how things turn out. If you see a big glow down Fla way, I didn't make it. Thanx.

What about the 00' XJ, does running the #19 injectors help this model 4.0 at all.

What size injectors are stock on the 4.0 Cherokee ?

IdahoJeeper
02-17-2005, 04:14 AM
I'm pretty sure the stock injectors on the 96-98 are the 19#, I really don't know what the 99+ have. I've been trying to find an article or something about it. I'm afraid, based on the one thing I read, going too big will just suck gas and make the XJ run rich. The reason it works so well for the pre-96 is they had crappy one nozzle injectors, the mustang take outs and such have a four nozzle tip which makes a way better fuel spray and allows more immediate fuel to be pushed in.

I'm curious if a 24# would work, but I don't want to see my mileage disappear...

19#

A stroker will take 24#

Thanks for the info, I'm more familiar with the old carbs. So it's both, the injector size and the spray pattern that affect the performance. Will the # 19 stang take outs also fit my 88 w/ the old Renix system ?

Yeppers.

Here's a full list of Jeep injector specs:

2.5 I4:

'89-'90 #83504851 ?
'91-'95 #53007232 ?
'96-'98 #53030778 23.2lb/hr @ 49psi

3.7 V6:

'02->> #53031099 24.0lb/hr @ 49psi

4.0 I6:

'87-'90 #53003956 18.6lb/hr @ 39psi
'91-'93 #33007127 21.0lb/hr @ 39psi
'94-'95 #53030343 21.0lb/hr @ 39psi
'96-'98 #53030778 23.2lb/hr @ 49psi
'99-'01 #04854181 22.5lb/hr @ 49psi

4.7 V8:

'99-'02 #53030842 22.5lb/hr @ 49psi
'02 HO #53032145AA 25.8lb/hr @ 49psi

5.2 V8:

'93-'94 #53007809 22.7lb/hr @ 39psi
'95 #53030262 24.6lb/hr @ 39psi
'96-'98 #53030778 23.2lb/hr @ 49psi

5.9 V8:

'98 #53030778 23.2lb/hr @ 49psi

Some of those specs that are hard to find in any workshop manual.

The following is a list of the injectors used on the 4.0L since 1987 along with their rated static flow:

Model Year, ...Part #, ......Colour, .....Fuel Pressure, ...Static Flow,
'87-'90, ........53003956, ...Black, ........39psi, .................18.6lb/hr
'91-'93, ........33007127, ...Brown, .......39psi, .................21.0lb/hr
'94-'95, ........53030343, ...Tan, ...........39psi, .................21.0lb/hr
'96-'99, ........53030778, ...Grey, .........49psi, .................23.2lb/hr
'99-'01, ........04854181, ...Blue tip, .....49psi, .................22.5lb/hr

The injector flow rate varies as the square root of the pressure drop across the injector. The stock '91-'95 4.0 injectors are rated at 22lb/hr @ 43psi fuel pressure, so at 39psi they flow ( sq. rt.(39/43) x 22.0 = 21.0 ).
For stock/modified 4.0 engines or stroker build-ups the following injectors can be installed. The flow rates are:

Ford Motorsport 19.0lb/hr @ 39psi (Part no. FMS-M9593-C302)
Ford Motorsport 24.0lb/hr @ 39psi (Part no. FMS-M9593-A302)
Ford Motorsport 30.0lb/hr @ 39psi (Part no. FMS-M9593-B302)
Chevy LT1 24.0lb/hr @ 43.5psi (Part no. 17124248)
Chevy LT4 28.0lb/hr @ 43.5psi (Part no. 17124251)
Accel 19.2lb/hr @ 44.1psi (ACC-150119)
Accel 21.1lb/hr @ 44.1psi (ACC-150121)
Accel 24.4lb/hr @ 44.1psi (ACC-150124)
Accel 25.6lb/hr @ 44.1psi (ACC-150126)
Accel 29.4lb/hr @ 44.1psi (ACC-150130)

The '95 Jeep 5.2 ZJ/Dodge 5.9 injectors (Part no. 53030262) are rated to flow 24.6lb/hr at 39psi.

The selection of injector size will depend on the estimated horsepower output, brake specific fuel consumption BSFC (assume 0.5), no. of cylinders, and the injector duty cycle (assume 80% or 0.8). The formula is:

Injector size (lb/hr) = (horsepower x 0.5)/(no.of cylinders x 0.8)

wow alot of info to process!! Somy 1993 with the 21.0 would benefit with the 19.0 because of the more nozzles?

Id stick with the #21 unless you want to run leaner - unless you go with a adjustable map sensor.

Not more nozzles - just a better flow pattern then stock.

More then likely .5 to 1.5 mpg increase. Unless of course the stocks are really dirty like mine were.

Im getting 16-17 mpg CITY and 23-24 mpg Highway. Of course I have done some bolt on mods.

what other bolt on mods do you have? I recieve 12-14city and highway I have no idea, They are both combined... Paying for insurance, college, rent. Gas gets expensive realy quick

Got rid of the stock airbox and got a K&N fuel injection system. Also a bored out throttle body and a aftermarket ignition system - opened the plugs up to .55". Free flow cat back and exhaust sytem. All of those really helped that 4.0 breath alot easier.

AMEN to that, I just bored mine out to 62mm, installed TB spacer and put on high flow filter. Saw immediate improvement to MPG and power. Coming soon, new header to replaced cracked out one and eventually cat-back.

With the exhaust cracked I have read that it can screw with the o2 sensor! I need to replace mine but got to get the cash up to get a Banks header!

Yeah, a cracked exhaust header can cause all kinds of grief. I too am saving coin for mine, either Banks or Thorley, also need to fix that smashed down pipe. I've heard they come stock like that (smashed flat), is that true...?

Yep. Crimped like that on purpose. 1) For clearance for the front axle/driveline and 2) For backpressure (Inline 6 needs some backpressure). When I get my Banks Im gonna go have a muffler shop fab me a downpipe - cheapest way to do it!

You can either buy it like that or have a machine shop do it.

Or you can do it yourself! RIGHT HERE! (http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoTBboring.htm)

So...

If Jeep crimps the dumb thing intentionally, are we doing bad things by opening it up? Wouldn't the rest of the exhaust system put enough back pressure on it to suffice or is it more the location of the restriction?

Or should I just put my header on the stock system and call it a day?
:dunno:

As far as the TB boring, I did mine myself, go to http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoTBboring.htm for the procedure. It's easy.

I wouldnt say bad things - Ive been running a 2.5" exhaust with a free flow cat and dyno muffler with no noticeable loss of power or torque. Anything is better then the stock system!
