My friend has a 1997 MX-6 V6 5sp. One day last week while at a stop light the motor started to rev on it own. As she drove away everything seemed fine but when she came to the next stop, it would just rev up and down.
Before she got home the engine light came on. A mechanic hooked it up and said it was the air control module? I may have the wrong, it was air control something. Anyway, it would be near $1000 repair when all said and done.
The mechanic however put what he called a bandaid fix on it and its ok right now. Not sure how long this will last.
Is anyone familiar with this problem and is this cost right? Any info would be much appreciated.
Matt

Hmm.. I would say that it was the VAF that was causing this problem. Yes, if you buy one from Mazda it will cost you a VERY pretty penny. However go on other MX6 forums and you can pickup a VAF typically for about 50$... look on the black thing on your Intake that has a wre running to it. **I THINK** it is a KL02.. check to confirm, and if it is... buy one used. PM me and I might be able to find you one.

i just started having this problem yesterday. i have a 96 v6 ls 5 spd. my freind told me that it might be a air thing (ie: intake, maf sensor, etc.). when i drive its normal but when im sitting at a light it revs from about 750 up to 1500 and then back down over and over. the interesting part is that my check engine light was on for a o2 sensor that i thought was going bad, but when this started the light went off. ill prolly take the car up to my freinds shop and hook it back up to the diagnostic machine agian and see what it says about the o2 sensor. maybe ill get lucky and it will start doing the rev thing agian so we can see whats going on. if anyone has any ideas or anything that i havent thought of please feel free to let me know. :banghead:

It could also be a vaccum leak. Check and double check all the vaccum hoses. Its the easier option ;) hopefully that fixes it
Thanks BTW :) i just bought it and cant wait for summer to be back! My car is a snowbank right now :(
