ok, my wife had my civic hatch today to go to work and when she was on her way home the check engine light came on(forgot to look what it was throughing) and then about 2 min later the car over heated really badly. so she stopped and had me come and get her. when i got there, water was running out of the water pump from where the seal is on the rod for the timing belt. also i noticed that my timing belt was badly ripped in a coupple of spots like it was about to rip off. what would cause this to happen?? it was fine till tonight. also the water pump and timing belt are like 3 months old too. i think something got in the timing cover and cought on it or something. but the water pump, i dont know. ill find out tomarrow when i go work on my car at a rayles parking lot. so much fun...

Make sure that the cam and crank oil seals aren't leaking. The oil eats at the timing belt making it weak, which could cause unusual wear. But it sounds more like something is caught.

if the check engine light came on then you can check your ECU for the code. the code will store in the ECU until it's cleared. so unless you pulled out your battery or some fuses, the code will still be in your ecu

sounds like the belt might have been too tight....too tight is why the belt was stretched (cracked)

too tight made the water pump over work and bust. car overheating was from busted water pump. you can tell the water pump is busted by leaking water. that is about the only way to tell your pump is busted as there isn't much to it, it's a very basic in design concept kind of part.
