Im considering buying a 94 Z with LT1 engine with 4spd automatic trans. The car has 120000 miles and is in very good condition. Hell ill say it is in mint cond. It is owned buy an older guy that has had it since 20000 mi. What im wondering is what kind of reputation does this auto trans have? Should i worry about it at all. Like i say the car was highway driven buy an older guy. Figured i would get some of your opinions. Thanks alot.

its a 4l60e 700r4. the tranny isn't quite bulletproof but damn close. don't worry bout the tranny at all, maybe change the fluid cuz u don't know if the guy ever changed it. if i were you i would do a good tune up of the engine since it has so many miles, though if it was old man highway driving then that engine may very well have alot of life left in it. not to mention the LT1 is a good performance engine, good enough to put many a 'stang into your rear view mirror

yeah, the tranys in the camaros are tough... it takes a lot to trash one... but like drvngstorm05 said, a change in fluid would be advised, i would also change the filter while your at it (some people ignore it) and when you do a tune up on it, gap the spark plugs just a little bit more then what it is called for, it will do better with a bigger gap wince its got so many miles on it... dont go too big tho just about .1 bigger then it calls for... good luck to ya.

Let's just say i'm running on the original tranny in my 94' Z28. My friend has an 04' Mach 1 and has had nothing but tranny problems (granted he's got a stick and i have an auto hehe...but u get the idea). Very reliable cars...much more than i thought when i first bought it.

Granted its on a v6 but i have the original 4l60e on my 97, with almost 159,000 miles on it. Only thing is that when i put it in gear it takes a second and the car sorta shakes but its not as bad as i make it sound lol. In short, dfinately a strong reliable trans, its funny how my ford friends tell me not to rev high, nto to drive hard etc, they dont understand that as logn as theyre broken in and maintained right these chevy enignes and trans last a loooooooooong time

a good transmission flush would probly fix some of your problem... i dont know how much it cost out your way, but around here its only like 60 bucks and they will flush it properly, rerplace the filter, and clean out the torque converter too... it makes a tremendous difference afterwords.... but before you do all that... i would check the torque of your transmission pan bolts.... for some reason chevrolets have a common problem of at high miles the trans. pan blots start to come a little loose... and if ignored cause problems.... but yup.. i agree with with ya... they are great - i think they are more reliable then about anyhting on the road... if you ever decide to get rid of yours send me an email [email protected]

Well, I am glad you guys had better luck then I did in my old, X-1995 Trans Am (Automatic)

I bought it from a lady with just 19k miles, the tires were still like new, so I knew she didn't dog it...

ON THE WAY HOME...I saw large amounts of smoke coming from my new T/A!

I pulled over & the tranny fluid was dripping down fast on my exhaust...

I take it to Pontiac, and they said its like a $800 fix...I said ok, well do it, it should be on warranty...

They said NO...The 3 year portion of the 3 year 36k miles warr. was up, even with such low miles...

After a long talk with the area service GM rep and researching online, I found that issue was common on F-Body's...I ended up paying $100...

It took me a LONG time to have faith in a GM car again...

Maybe I was in the minority?

My original lasted about 120K. If you service the tranny regularly and don't abuse them, Which I did and do. They should last for a long time to come but no your not the minority I have heard alot of people having issue with there tranny but those are also the same people that couldn't tell me the last time they did a fluid and filter change. I think for the most part they hold up very well to performance car abuse.

Yea the LS1 is definently an awsome engine. I had driven a few LT1's before, but they dont even compare to the power of the LS. I also like the traction control it makes for extremely fast takeoffs. Ill probably get back to you guys when i decide what mods i would like to install.
