1st of all, $6500 isn't enough to buy a vr4, unless it's in crappy condition.

2nd of all, go get a quote for insurance on it and then decide if you really want one. Insurance will not be too nice for a 16 year old on a vr4.

yea i already did get a quote it is going to cost me like $4000 a year because of my age and the 3kgt is a sports car...my cousin got a nice Vr4 for 6k but i am just looking around...i dont want no POS honda or anything like that! i've wanted a 3kgt since i can remember and i will do absolutley anything to get my hands on one...

You won't be able to find a VR4 for that much, SL you can though so look there and save up so you can get the car you realy want later on. Don't even think about a VR4 Spyder, they are crazy rare and even more insanely priced when they come on the market.

Hey bro not to be a dick or nothing, but i say definitely, definitely do not buy a vr4. I am 18 and and I just recently got my SL about 2 months ago. The thing runs great and its very fast as well, you will be very satisfied with the SL. I looked at about 5 different vr4s when i wanted that sweet as twin turbo and they are SO high in maintenance. Everyone i talked to had basically told me this phylosophy: If you dont have about 4 grand in the bank at all times dont go near the vr4. The turbos from what i hear go about around 140k miles and they very expensive to replace. You also have to factor in the expense of the 60k mile tuneup which comes out around 1000 dollars, but must be done on all models of the GTs. But from what it sounds you wont have thousands of dollars at the age you are at to pay for all of it. But hey man ya never know, maybe you would find a nice one that someone took care of with no problems what so ever. Its just the chance of you dropping thousands upon thousands of dollars in the twin turbo is so likely it isnt worth it. Go with a SL, I promise you wont be satisfied. Put the GT on your moms name, i cant stress that enough. THats what i did and we are paying 50 bucks a month :) and I am covered on it as well. Just my opinion, keep us updated on your purchase though.

Thanks guys...i wasn't going to even think about the Vr4 spyder anyway..i dont like convertibles...but thanks for all the info...i will prolly start looking at sl's for now on until i get a little older to get a good job so i can get Vr4...ever since my cousin let me drive his Vr4 about a year ago? i would say i've been absolutley addicted to the Vr4 i can honestly say it scared the sh*t out of me when i really opened it up on the straight...so i hope the SL will be able to do the same thing...i will keep all you guys up to date on my purchase tho...thanks a lot

turbos are not expensive to replace. you can buy replacement stock turbos for 300 dollars.

heyheyhey?! what about a good solid base model 3000GT? cheaper than an SL and you don't have that crappy leather. ya i said...leather sucks. might feel nice, but it doesn't grip you when autocrossing on side streets and its cold in winter and hot in summer...cloth stays at a moderate temp all year round. i got my base with 47k miles for a little over 8grand 2 yrs ago. in better shape now, but no regrets.

If you want more info, about every week someone comes on here and asks if a 3000gt is a good first car, so I'd do a search for "first car", you will find at least 20 threads with mostly the same info. Basically, the popular opinion around here is that the vr4 is too expensive to maintain and a bit too powerful for a first car. Also check out the FAQ as it has tons of good info for potential new owners. But yeah, check out the SL or base, you still love them.

The SL is a fine choice and you can get a decent one in your price range. A VR4 in your price range would be pretty rough. A VR4 Spyder in your price range would mean that its been totalled.

Wouldn't seat covers do the trick tho to help out with the warm/cold problem... or what about just plain old racing seats???

Or the seller is stupid.

Wasn't there some guy that got a spyder for 8k off autotrader not to long ago?

ya, i guess so, but who would want to put a seat cover over leather seats? i was just saying how much i enjoy my cloth seats b/c they're always a relatively constant temperature. leather is fine, i just wouldn't choose it. to me its unnecessary, but others like it. my bro has leather in his explorer. its nice, but so is cloth.

and ya, racing seats would be awesome. love that bucket feel when you take a hard corner and get planted into the seat.

I've never heard of one going that cheap that was in any type of working order. Most of us who own one keep an eye on ebay for Spyders. I know I do and would have bid on the thing myself it were that low at the close of the auction.

Seems iffy to me, What year is it? Who knows how long it would take the guy to get the engine in, seems wierd to be selling for so low unless the new engine is realy high milage and the paint sucks.

when i talked to the guy on the phone he said that the engine waiting to go in is totally brand new...i am taking my friends dad with me (he is a mechanic) he will be able to tell me if i will have to put big money into it or not...the paint is good from what i saw when i drove by it today...it is white...the year is 94'...does the 94' have a 6spd or 5spd trans in it? i didn't get to go look at it today because it started snowing like hell right before i was gonna leave...my mom is dropping me off there tomorrow morning when she leaves to go to the doctors...but once i get ALL the details i will get back to you guys...

94 has the 6spd...

If your mechanic friend thinks its in good shape, then why not. But I'd ask to see a receipt of the new engine and find out why put the money forth to buy a new engine, when he could have just sold it as is.

hey guys,
i went and looked at that Vr4 yesterday afternoon and it is in good shape....the motor is brand new, the only thing wrong with the exterior is that someone backed up into the right front fender and there is a dent and a scratch there....and there is one minor thing wrong with the interior...someone ripped out the glove box...lol...i dont see how you can do something like that...my mechanic friend said other than those two things the car is in great shape...oh and i found out it is a 92' not a 94' like i thought it was...the chassie has 148k miles on it.....and the new engine is not a stock engine he upgraded the turbos...he said it should make somewere near 350-370 HP at the flywheel...about how much would that be at the wheels???....i am calling the guy today to tell him i want it...and ask him if i can give him monthly payments instead of just $5000 cash...cause i dont have that much in cash at the moment...oh and by the way....all 4 tires are flat from just sitting there...how much would a good set of high performance tires cost? alright guys i'll get back to you....thanks for everything....

Ok, he said he upgraded the turbos...find out what turbos are going in, also find out what supporting mods he has with it, if he is just dropping in turbos without the proper supporting upgrades, you will break something quick. Also find out what year the new motor is.
Also 92 was the transition year for vr4s, I'd find out if it has the 18spline or 25spline output shaft. And what year the new motor is from, is it a 2 bolt or 4 bolt main. That is higher mileage, and I personally would look for something lower, but if this is the best you can find in your price range, and your mechanic says it is good, then why not. But I'd still be questioning why this guy is dropping in a new motor and upgraded turbos for free...that potentially is over $5,000 in parts and labor...so why is he doing all that and then selling it. Something just doesn't add up to me.

Yo nick i snagged my VR4 off an old women for 5000 bills and she fucked up her engine in 94 so she got a new one put in in 94. its a 91 with the newer 320 horsepower engine, CHill shit, sucks that i crashed that shit. Its a great car man. But like people are saying insurance is a bitch for a kid and I had a red one and it was gay. If have any luck like i did i have all the part the engine and tranmission are still good 70,000 miles on the engine twin turbo, only thing that is damage is the entire rear Cup SUCKS

FYI, color makes no difference in your insurance rate.

Twist...a color can be bright, dark, etc...but not gay. Also please watch the langauge, we prefer to keep AF a bit more clean and professional, especially this section. That being said, welcome to AF.
