Hi, I have a 1996 Lincoln Continental. Where is the fuel filter located? The car alwas hesitates in the morning, but is fine after you give it a lot of gas, and it there is no more problems the rest of the day. Today I cranked the car up, and it ran, and then cut off. I then cranked it again, and it would not start. I floored the vehicle while cranking and let it run out at about 2000rpm, and then it smoothed out. I think I need a new fuel filter.

Fuel Filter
Note:
When replacing fuel filters, use the fuel filters specified for the engine being serviced.
Fuel is filtered at three locations:
l in-line
l in-tank
l fuel injectors
In-Line
In-line fuel filter has the following characteristics:
l It provides filtration to protect the small metering orifices of the injector nozzles.
l It is located downstream of the electric fuel pump and is mounted on a bracket on the underbody.
l It is a one-piece construction which cannot be cleaned. If it becomes clogged, replace it.
In-Tank
A nylon filter element:
l is mounted on the fuel pump inlet and is used to protect the fuel pump from fuel contaminants.
l is not available separately.
Fuel Injector Screen
An injector filter is located at the top of each fuel injector and is not serviceable. If an injector screen becomes clogged, replace the complete fuel injector.

Removal
WARNING:
FUEL SUPPLY TUBES WILL REMAIN PRESSURIZED FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME AFTER ENGINE SHUT DOWN. THIS PRESSURE MUST BE RELIEVED BEFORE SERVICING OF THE FUEL SYSTEM IS BEGUN TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL SPRAYING OF FUEL RESULTING IN PERSONAL INJURY OR FIRE HAZARD. A VALVE IS PROVIDED ON THE FUEL CHARGING ASSEMBLY FOR THIS PURPOSE. REMOVE THE AIR CLEANER. ATTACH EFI/CFI FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE T80L-9974-B OR EQUIVALENT TO THE FUEL DIAGNOSTIC VALVE ON THE FUEL CHARGING ASSEMBLY. PRESSURE IN THE FUEL SYSTEM MAY NOW BE RELEASED.
WARNING:
BECAUSE OF THE COMBUSTION CHARACTERISTICS OF GASOLINE, ALWAYS USE EXTREME CARE WHEN REMOVING AND INSTALLING ANY FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENT TO PREVENT PERSONAL INJURY OR FIRE HAZARD.
1. Shut engine OFF. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Service Procedures.
2. Remove push connect fittings at both ends of fuel filter as outlined.
3. Remove fuel filter from fuel filter bracket by loosening fuel filter and base mounting clamp enough to allow fuel filter to pass through.
Installation
1. Note: Fuel filter and base mounting clamp must be positioned on fuel filter bracket.
Note: The flow arrow direction should be positioned forward and downward to make sure of proper flow of fuel through replacement fuel filter.
Install fuel filter in fuel filter bracket, making sure of proper direction of flow as noted earlier. Position fuel filter against tab at lower end of bracket.
2. Install push connect fittings at both ends of fuel filter as outlined.
3. Tighten fuel filter and base mounting clamp to 1.7-2.8 N-m (15-24 lb-in).
4. Start engine and inspect for leaks
