86 IROC Transmission

My son's '86 IROC (305 cui, automatic transmission) developed a transmission problem. It won't shift out of first gear. It happened suddenly - no indication of pending problems such as slipping, hard shifting/slamming, etc. Reverse works, and a visual check of the linkage shows it appears to move the lever through all the gears.
My brother-in-law, an ex-Chevy mechanic, said to check the "shift sensor" to see if it came loose or the line came off. He said it is on the passenger side of the trainy, but I've looked everywhere and don't see it. A different mechanic at my local Chevy dealership said there is no such sensor or selenoid, and that it's likely the shift cable is broke or loose. As stated already, that appears to be fine. Digging through the web reveals there is a T.V. cable that runs from the engine intake manifold to the trainy. I found what appears to be that cable, but don't have a clue where it runs to (disappears behind and between the engine and firewall).
I've never known a trainy to simply stop working in all gears but 1st and reverse. Is there some stupid sensor or selonoid I'm missing???
