O2 sensor WILL NOT come out..

So I hada CEL go on a few weeks ago.. had to replace the O2 sensor.. the problem is I can't get the old one out!

I tried myself, then brought it to a mechanic. He poured on the WD40, heated it with a torch, the sucker would not move. He said the best best would be to get a new manifold... or.. the way I'm leaning.. some headers and put the new one in with them.

How much is a new manifold from Honda? Would it be smarter to put in the headers (cost wise). I wasn't planning anymore performance mods for this car, because I want to sell it for something faster.

Have you tried using an impact wrench on the O2 sensor? I had one on another vehicle that was really stubborn that needed a big impact to get out.

If you need to replace the manifold, a junkyard one may be the cheapest, otherwise a header would cost less than a new honda manifold. The only thing to watch out for with a header is the pipe diameter, it might not bolt directly to your exhaust system.

No he didn't try an impact wrench.. tried a blowtorch though.. that was interesting..

try the impact wrench idea. they also make a special socket for use with o2 sensors that has a cut on the side for the wires. may want to check into that

I was using the O2 sensor wrench.. nothing.. I mean we're talking about a 200ish lb guy putting all his weight into turning that nut.. nothin doin.

I had to use the arm off my jack. You really need good leverage on it. But I also let WD40 soak in for about 30-60 minutes.

I actually took my whole exhaust manifold off and wedged it against my tire of my car to get some good leverage.

After you get it off remember to add some anti-seize compound to the threads.

For getting out the old sensor, cut the wire right next to the sensor so a normal socket will fit over it. And use an impact. Taking off the manifold seems kinda extreme if you can get your hands on an impact, and the exhaust manifolds are so thick that you'd be hard pressed to heat it enough with a torch to make a difference.

i ended up sawing mine in half so i could fit a regular deep socket over it, then managed to get it off with just a big ratchet

That impact driver is different tool than an impact wrench.

I can't cut mine though.. because if I cut it and it still doesn't come off then I'm really screwed.

check out the socket that miataracer is talking about. rent an impact wrench and get an adapter if you need one to get that socket to fit and have at her.
