The automotive forecast predicted that consumers would welcome the new Altima with high praise and open arms, but no one knew that the Nissan would come this far. This past January, the Altima took the coveted North American COTY Award. Details from Nissan:
Detroit (January 6, 2002) - The all-new 2002 Nissan Altima was named "North American Car of the Year" today at an announcement at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The award is given to the vehicle receiving the most votes from a group of 50 top automotive journalists from the United States and Canada. It is based on a comprehensive evaluation of all new and significantly redesigned vehicles for the 2002 model year.
"The North American Car of the Year award is one of the most prestigious accolades in the automotive industry - it's a tremendous honor for Altima," said Jed Connelly, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Nissan North America Inc. "We are pleased with the consumer and media response to the Altima since it hit dealership showrooms in August."
The awards committee judges eligible vehicles based on innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.
"The 2002 Altima is a distinctive sedan with spirited performance and style designed to go head-to-head against the longtime class leaders in the midsize sedan segment," said Connelly. "This award proves that it does just that."
And without even breaking motion, the Altima does it again in February with Motorweek's Best of the Year award. Details from Nissan's news:
(February 18, 2002) - Adding to its rapidly growing list of accolades, the all-new 2002 Nissan Altima was named "Best of the Year" by MotorWeek at the Chicago Auto Show. The Altima will be featured on MotorWeek on PBS, beginning February 23, 2002, and on cable television's Speed Channel, beginning March 14, 2002.
"The Nissan Altima demonstrates that when you study the American family, and build a car just for them, it's bound to be a guaranteed hit," said John Davis, host and executive producer of MotorWeek. "A family car need not be boring; Nissan has proven that by combining modern sport sedan styling with class-leading performance. Add on the Altima's delivery of more interior room and standard features than any other sedan in its class and you have a clear winner."
Selected from 12 category winners, the four-door sedan topped the 2002 MotorWeek's Drivers' Choice Awards list to garner this annual mark of distinction. The awards were chosen by a team of 10 judges, comprised of the journalists, staff and crew of MotorWeek. Judges' decisions were based on superior performance, technology, practicality and dollar value.
"It's a true honor to be recognized as MotorWeek's Best of the Year," said Jed Connelly, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Nissan North America, Inc. "This award reconfirms our belief that the Altima offers the best combination of performance, style and value in its class."
The Nissan Sentra was also selected to the 2002 MotorWeek's Driver's Choice Awards list. The Sentra was named the "Best Small Car," an award the Sentra also won last year.
Nice to know the resurgence in Nissan's sales is coming on strong. And for once, a car actually lives up to its advertised hype. Hmm.. It doesn't even stop here. G35 or 350Z anyone? And after that, the issue of an American GT-R is still in the air...
