Gas Smell

Got my car maybe 5 months ago. Been running it fine till last month. i changed out my o2 sensor for the 3rd time and it really smells like gas when i stand by the back of my car. changed my plugs and wires. figured id ask what to check. a guy told me maybe its dumping too much gas into my engine but i woudlnt know what to check to see if it is. all i know is i get crappy mileage and it smells horrid. any ideas thanks in advance.

yo usay when your behind your car.. is it like a smell as if you were at a gas station.. or is it coming out the exhaust? Basically fresh gas smell or semi burnt(?) kinda smell?

semi burnt. its the stinkey old gas smell you get. not the fresh gas smell. it comes out the exaust and my ecu is throwing code 1 the o2 sensor it only comes on every once in a while but the ecu saves the code the whole time. i replaced my o2 sensor 3 times now and it still smells like gas. trying to find out if something is leaking or not but i dont know where to start.

First, clear the ecu by disconnecting the battery, and leave it off for awhile. Secondly, have you tried changing the distibutor cap and rotor?

Have you checked your catalitic converter?

check what your fuel pressure is at. have you checked every plug to see for a fact that their all getting spark?

how do i check my fuel pressure? and what should i look for in my cat? the plugs are new and i know all of the wires are sparking plus the engine purs. just smells like gas. ill try and change my rotor cap and button next paycheck.

does the engine smell like gas all the time or when it's hot or cold.

If it's hot when it does it, you might want to check your TW sensor (if it has one, my honda did). This caused it to smell really bad due to my sensor thinking that my car was alway cold, therefore, dumping in more fuel.

Could also be a faulty/broken injector that's leaking gas all the time - could have cracked or something. I'd check those too.

Sometimes a plugged catalitic converter will smell like sulfur and a sharp decrease in mileage and performance will occur. Most service centers can test the back pressure in your exhaust system

ok so i just went to get emmisions tested. i passed thank god. on everything i was way low compared to normal. during the 2500rpm test i tested 95 out of 225 on the HC(PPM) or whatever it is. but at idle i tested at 195 out of 225. still passed though. anyway im gonna go down to my local shop and get some stuff tested the guy said he would look at the cat and the injectors for free so since i know him ill prolly only have to pay for parts.

i dont understand why it smells like gas so bad if your hydrocarbons are so low.

hey another question when i try and start my car the last two days in the morning there is a noise in the back. im guessing my fuel pump and then it dosent do anything i have to let it sit then try again and so on over and over. then it starts no problem. any ideas?

When it does finally start does it make black smoke?Your injectors may be leaky.
