Sony Xplode Subs

i have 2 of those sony xplode sub boxes that used to be in my car, the ones with a 12" in each box, with the red front and black carpet. does anyone know if i could put them in a different box to go behind my reg cab? i always thought subs were designed for certain boxes and specs. like if they went in a smaller box with the improper measurements they would sound like crap. any suggestions?

yea, i would suggest getting a sub that is made for small spaces. I know pioneer just put out a 12" sub that is only like 8" deep or something like that.

To be completely honest with you, Sony subs are one of the worst. Sony audio in general is not good. I would go with subs that fit tight spaces better. And generally speaking, with audio products, you generally pay for what you get.

I agree with this 100%. I'm the only sony dealer within a 45 mile range and the only thing I'd use from them is my CD player. I like it so far.

I've had good results from Rockford, Kicker, and especially some higher end Infinity.

I just picked up the dealership for Pioneer, Rockford, Q-Logic, Pro box, Lightning Audio and MB Quart. WOOHOO!!

i know they , arent the best..they did last me 3 yrs in my car though with constant bass abuse. i was thinking of using them only cause i had the amp and subs and couldnt afford a whole new set up.

I see what you're up to now. If you've got the stuff already and are trying to save money then by all-means do it. It makes perfect sense to me.

I just hooked up 2 Boswtick HDX 12's in a Caddy wiht a 500.1 Bostwick amp...the exact setup I have. In the box we used for the car, those frickin things pounded! Amazing what a difference a different box makes.

smaller boxes can be made better by use of ports or passive radiators (old school). The sub will work fine in a smaller box but the performance will suffer considerably. Amp shouldn't be an issue. Pesonally I would probably try to sell or trade the sony's and try kickers. Kicker is mainly free air which mean very small enclosure requirements ( perfect for behind the seat.

On a side note: Jayson is lightning audio really made by rockford fosgate or was the guy at Circuit City just yanking my chain?

I think he's yankng your chain man, but I'll check. We can get both Rockford and Lightning Audio, but from different wholesalers.
I just put some LA 6.5's 2-ways in my doors and I'm impressed with them. Also, they're blue and they match my truck :icon16:

I think the best is to go with mtx's thunderform or probox under the rear seat. I went with MTX since they are a bigger brand and they have a little bigger airspace per chamber. I have the crappy MTX 4500s in there now, and with 150 watts per speaker at 4 ohms, it sounds good, but not what I expected. I am putting 2 old JL W6s in there, but some say the old W3 is better. There is .9 cubic inches of space per sub, so the box will work with both. I think the probox has only .7 cubic inches per chamber, but could be wrong.

Either way, for $300 on Ebay you can get an MTX box with both subs that sound decent, then add $200 worth of subs and get outstanding sound for 2 sealed 10s. (Will never have as much SPL as ported, but cleaner sound).
