Oil Cooler leaking

My 1995 GMC Jimmy SLT 4x4 V6 was in for a recall at the dealer, I just bought it a week ago and they said it has a leaking oil cooler and that two lines and the gasket need to be replaced at $405.00. I didn't have them do it, but need to know what this leak could do and where is the oil cooler located and any suggestions on fixing it myself or will I need to take it to a shop? Thanks

I'm not sure, but I think that the oil cooler lines are the hoses that go from the engine block to the remote oil filter. I had oil cooler lines replaced on my 99 Envoy 2 years ago due to both leaking oil, but it was covered under warranty.

Lucky you, I own a 98 Jimmy and had the lines replaced at a cost of just under $1000CND. It was not covered under my warranty.

Yoiu might check where the oil lines go into the remote oil filter. On the end of each one of those(4 in all) there is a little O-ring which seems to wear out on mine every couple years. The oil will track down the outside of the line and can make it appear that the lower end is leaking when it's actually coming from up top. It's an easy fix, and if you have a Harbour Freight tools near you their 250 piece o-ring kit has the correct size in there. Last one I bought was $5.00 for the entire kit. I'm sure they're probably a few bucks each at the stealership.

You can do it yourself, it's not difficult. About 60 bux for both sets of lines, 3 bux for a new gasket kit (only needed if the block adapter is leaking).

Pull the drivers motor mount cross bolt. Jack up engine about 3". Using an extention and a swivel and a 13mm socket, drop the block adapter. Disconnect the lines at the cooler itself (13mm) then the lines from the cooler to the radiator. Move the new block adapter to the new lines with a fresh set of crush washers (you will have gotten those with the lines) and replace in reverse. Will take less than an hour for a 1st timer.

The oil cooler problem turned out to be a lose hose only, tightened it it no more leak.

Just an FYI, when I lived in Regina, SK, I had mine done for the cost of the parts - $190 (deal with dealership I purchased from). There was another option which ran ~ $500 installed. This consisted of using pressure fittings (their patent???) and claimed to prolong the life of these cooler lines.
