i just changed my cabin air filter today. it is very simple.... underneath passenger side dash, there should be a kick plate... remove kickplate, 3 or 4 screws... then there is one screw which is kinda hidden, but a little harder to get out, that holds a the cover which is about one inch by 7-8 inches long..... slide out one filter then the other one.... you should have 2 filters.... put everything back together.... 15- 20 minutes tops....the hardest part---one of the screws for the kickplate was the toughest to put back....good luck... gives that clean smell, especially if you have allergies....

I've heard that '03-up don't have them, but I sure can't prove it =). Maybe next time I get around to seeing my '04 (college campus, the damn thing is parked nearly a mile away!), I'll have a poke around and see what I can see.

Hey guys, I just changed the 2 filters on my 99' they, were, dis gus ting!
:bloated:
I have the kick plate on mine took about 30 minutes to complete the job. Hardest part was the one screw that holds the kick plate on in the middle. For whatever reason GM has recessed the Screw hole and it's hard to get to.
Better Air flow now, now I just have figure out how to get the damn Smoker smell out of my truck. It's not too bad but, it's definately there.

K o I'll give it a shot. I've heard too if you Febreeze the Sh*t out of your vehicle it works too.
Also, Shampoo your vehicle then sprinkle Baking soda in and wait a few days then vacuum the Baking Soda up.
I'll give that Baking Soda thing a try though...

Well i just took mine out and disgusting is an understatement. A 7mm deep socket works great to get at that recessed screw although it just boggles the mind as to why GM would use a 7/32 screw to hold on the access door for the filters. Metric for 99% and stardard for 1%....go figure. Another thing that boggles the mind is the price they want for the filters here, $35.........APIECE, i can get them cost at a parts store i usually deal with for $25 apiece , but still. For now i knocked all the loose crap out , vaccumed them real good and put them back but will remove them tomorrow at work and blow them out with compressed air then reinstall them till i feel like paying 50-70 bucks. Hell that is all most garages used to do with air filters for the engines , knock the loose crap out and give a quick wipe with a rag and reinstall. 130p.s.i will clean them pretty good , if not blow them apart :biggrin:

yea, the price is a little crazy... I dont really use my cabin filter that much, only if im behind a trash truck, bus, or if someone farted in my truck. And of course when i ordered the new ones from the local auto store, they had to get me the most expensive K&N filters. Thanks, I always wanted some hige performance filters for my cab, maybe now i can go faster... j/k.
dont minde me people, im just a little bored.

This might relate to this filter but on my 99 I could turn my heat or air controls to off and nothing would come out of the vents and on my 02 I turn it all the way off and I still feel the air coming through my air vents depending on what temp I have the gauge on hot or cold. I thought maybe the cabin filter might either be gone or from reading this it sounds like I dont have one on the 02.

Well I've never claimed to be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but after nearly convincing myself that my '99 Z71 LS that had nearly every option available, didn't have a cabin filter, guess what, I finally found it! I guess I hadn't realized that whole big ass plastic cover had to come off first. Anyhow, got the little L shaped cover off and had to DIG the filters out! Took out what had to be a pound of dirt, bug bodies, weed seeds, mold, mildew and dog hair. (Bought my truck used, from a farm). Holy crap. I beat the hell out of the filters, vacuumed them and then used the air compressor on them. Then I sprayed 'em down good with that Febreeze stuff. Made a world of difference. I always wondered why it stunk like mildew whenever I used the A/C.

I have a '99 X-Cab, LS. It has the center console. The manual does not give a clear description on the location of the filter. Can someone clarify it for me? I'd rather do it myself than pay the dealership to do it. In AZ, the price of the filters are $35-$40, depending on the dealer.
Thanks in advance.

Yea, even my Haynes repair manual neglects to say that the big black plastic cover has to come off first. Three screws hold that sucker on, I got the middle and the right side one out but the left one is kinda hard to get at, its in front of your center console. I just loosened it enough to let the cover drop down. Then there is a little cover about a inch and a half wide that has one screw towards the front near the firewall. take that out and pull the little cover down. You should see the first filter. Take it out and the second filter is stuffed in behind it. I couldn't get a hold of mine so I used a piece of wire with a little hook bend on the end to snag it and pull it out. The filters set right next to the heater core if that helps.

What company and where abouts in Canada? I as well live in Canada and that is a pretty good price compared to what the "stealership" wants for them.

You can buy it most Canadian Tire stores....if they don't have them in stock...ask them to order it for you...may take a couple days, but worth it...they are supposed to be the best...

I originally called Canadian tire for a price on them and that is where i got the $35 apiece price from......maybe i will call a coupld of other ones maybe although i can;t really see that much of a price difference from one to the other
