Hey yall, got a question, how interchangeable are the mech. parts from an 84 944 to an 85? both non-turbo. Mainly i need to know about the clutch. The 85 doesnt have one and i need to know if i can pull out the 84 and put it in the 85. The 85 needs 3k worth of body work and it makes more sense to just buy a newer one that i can fix up thats got a straight body and engine.

Is is an early 85 or 85.5? If it is an early 85 it will work. I think the engine is the same in all 944's till 87. I'll do some checking.

I'm not 100% sure. it looks much newer inside than mine so i think its the latter half of 85. I'm hopin that all the parts will fit cause this is a good purchase if it will work.

i think your clutch interchange will work, but don't do it! you have to remove the entire exhaust system, the transaxle, the torque tube, shifter rod, starter, slave cylinder, two sensors and ground cables off the bell housing (that you can barly see much less get to), then you have to pry the engine over to one side to shoehorn the bell housing off. my point is just buy new parts. you will be much happier in the long run.

ok, so i get new parts. Wont it take that same amount of work to replace the clutch in the new one?

Yep same procedure on both cars. So if you don't mind the work go for it! Some things to keep in mind though: Clutch in 84 might be busted. OEM uses rubber centers instead of newer spring clutch centers that are said to be better. Your call. It isn't hard changing out as long as you have a couple jackstands and a jack. Good Luck
