99 - 00 coupe is the better option.

And there are significant differences under the skin, Subaru totally overhauled the Impreza design in '98 for the US market (97 for the rest of the world) improving performance and handling.

BTW, the 2.5 has a lot better torque and power than the 2.2

Yeah, newer is almost always better, too. Less stuff will be broken or about to break (theoretically). But the 2.5 is an awesome platform; so was the 2.2, though, so if you find a 2.2 for cheap go for it.

If you're getting rid of the 240 because everyone is driving one, you're gonna be getting rid of the Impreza pretty soon too. I mean, 80% of the "better" part of the tuner style cars here in Aus are either Silvias or Imprezas. : )

That's all very well, but what if he's not in Australia?

Here in a America, 80% of tuner cars are Honda Civics and Mitsubishi Eclipses, the small remainder being 240's and various other cars.

So, if he's in America and wants to get an Impreza to break away from that connotation, he's on the right track.

So the 1998 MY Imprezas are the 'new' ones? Depending on how much that horrid clunk in the Camry is going to cost to fix, I might be in the market for a new car sooner than I expected.

Any rough estimates on what a 98-01 sedan or wagon w/automatic would cost? I want to do the standard suspension, body, and engine mods after I get it.

I just grabbed my 2000 Impreza Sportwagon for about $14000 back in June from the dealer. I'm sure you could do a lot better now.

That's a good point. But all I was pointing out was that the imprezas will no doubt explode in America as they did here in Australia. I was just trying to say that if he mainly wants to get it for originality, it's not going to be long until the imprezas are everywhere, just as he says 240s are becoming too common.
