My headlights suck!

Does anyone have a gripe with how little light the headlights put on the road. I have a 98 Taurus and even though my headlamps are aligned, they just don't light the road up enough. It is not an alternator problem or anything like that, just poor lamps. I guess the bulbs could just be old. I'm thinking of putting in some 80/100w lamps in but I'm not sure the lamp harness could handle the extra load. The only other alternative is installing some aux. lamps, but I really don't want to go that far. Any ideas?

Don't do the 80/100W bulbs, they're too hot, likely to melt some plastic part(s). I've heard this is a common problem with them, besides being illegal. I got Silverstars (around $30 for the pair at Walmart) they helped, but these types of higher intensity bulbs will burn out sooner than the factory bulbs. There are those PIA bulbs, but they are too pricey for $60-80. Of course if you have the dough, you can go with the HID retrofit kits, last time I looked they cost about $500 if you install them yourself.

Thanks for the advice, I'll get the silverstar lamps and report back.
