Changed the battery in my key fob and now it doesnt work, is there a sequence you have to follow to re-programme using fob & key etc ?

Well, US models prior to '98 had a dealer installed entry system madee by Code Alarm, it was rectangular, had a VW logo & two buttons. If this sounds like what you have try this link;

The systems were dealer installed so location will vary. You might have to pull off the lower cover under the fuse box & look around for the wired in module & hopefully find the switch.
