Which Iwata airbrush?

Hey guys,

It's been a while since I've been into modeling, and am getting back into the hobby.

Canadian Tire has a 3 gallon Campbell Hausfield air compressor on sale for $75 this week - so I picked it up. It has it's own regulator and everything. Just gotta get a water trap and it's good to go.

But my old badger 350 has seen better days, and the last few times it was used it didn't give good results.

So I've been reading up here about airbrushes, and your preferences - and it looks like the Iwata is respected.

Problem is I'm not sure which one to go with. I'm leaning towards the Revolution CR, as it's got the dual action, and gravity feed (SICK of the bottles and cleaning them out!).

But the higher priced HP-C also looks pretty neat, as shown on this page: http://www.airbrush-depot.com/scripts/depot.exe?pgm=ihp.bbx

What do you guys think?

Not meaning to take your thread, but I'm saving up for a Iwata Revolution CR and can I use ANY air hose, water trap, etc to connect to the airbrush and a craftsman air compressor/tank?

and to MercCougarXR7 this might help

Hell yea! Out of all my airbrush's my Iwata Eclipse is the best! It handles any job very well! I would go with the CR because of its price and since your going to use it for modeling. My Eclipse HP-BCS is also good for modeling but also good for shirts which is what i was looking for. But the Eclipse BCS cost a bit more. Right now i use a Paasche VL for my models and the difference between my Iwata and my Paasche is severe! Not to mention my Badger! The Iwata is soo easy to handle. Its worth the buck! You get what you paid for!

Hi Merc,

A week or so ago I bought an Iwata Revolution HP-CR airbrush, after doing a bunch of research. They just seem to be the best on the market from most of the reports I've read, and the CR was exactly what I was looking for for the same reasons you mention above. I'm also getting back into modeling and my badger is basically dieing...

I actually got mine at a GREAT price on eBay. Normally here this airbrush is a tad over AUS$200, but on eBay I got it for AUS$95...!!! (plus postage)

Look up a seller (or eBay store) called Breakout Sales. He doesn't have many auctions, mostly Buy It Now items, so you'll get it anytime while he has them in stock. I got one of the two HP-CR's he had left, and he also threw in a free hobby knife!

He has them listed at US$70, or at least he did when I bought mine. He also stocks most other Iwata airbrushes. As a side note, he's also about the best eBay-er I've ever dealt with. Quick replies and FAST postage!

Check it out, and send me a message if you have any trouble or questions.

Cheers.

Mainly due the fact I wanted a side feed. but WAY better than my previous Aztek brushes.

Cool, great info here - thanks guys.

So I'm still leaning towards the Revolution CR, the eclipse is also cool - but if the CR does the same job, and it's cheaper - why not eh?

One question though - how about cleanup, how easy/hard is it to get all the paint out of a gravity feed brush like that, and are the CR's easy to clean?

the CR is all metal so clean up is a breeze. I have even left paint sitting in the cup (by accident I assure you) for a few days and after a bit of soaking in thinner it cleaned up like new. The chrome on the outside cleans up very well. mine looks brand new and i always spill paint down the side. Just a quick rub down with some thinner and she shines like new.

The eclipse has a larger cup and will also do a better job of spraying thicker materials and is better at higher pressures. However the Revolution is quite a bit less.

I have two Iwatas, one Eclipse HP-BCS (bottom feed with bottle), and one Revolution HP-CR (gravity feed). They are not equivalent, although both spray most paints very well. First, the revolution has a higher paint flow than the Eclipse. Fine line control is easier with the Eclipse for this reason. Second, the nozzle on the revolution is a small piece with a short length, not a funnel-like piece like on the Eclipse, so big flakes tend to clog the Revolution pretty easily (not a problem for Testors metallics at least). The cleaning is a bit easier on the Eclipse because you can take it apart by hand completeley, whereas you need to use a tiny wrench to unscrew the Revolution nozzle.

The guy at the shop (www.coastairbrush.com) said the best airbrush he would recommend for modeling cars is the Eclipse HP-CS, a gravity feed of a very high quality. Although it is an Eclipse just like my BCS, he said the construction is very different, hence the price difference ($110 vs $74).

Keep in mynd that the Eclipse airbrushes are meant for professional use, and sometimes need a lot of air to spray correctly (this is why I bought the revolution after the BCS, Lacquer does not atomizes well at the 25 PSI max my Iwata Smartjet produces on this airbrush)

So the extra expense seems to be worth it for the Eclipse huh? Then I'm sold on it!

Ah yeah, there are a few TCCoA'ers on here, usually trying to help people out in the Tbird/Cougar sections. When's it going to be done? Could be years ;)!

Thanks for the help Gents, time to whip out the old credit card and further inflate my ballance :banghead: .
