My name is David. I have a 1998 GSR and I want to shift more effieciently. I have been trying to find out what "powershifting" is. I have heard things about it being able to shorten quarter mile times by a couple tenths of a second if done properly. Can anyone here explain to me what it is, or how it is done? It involves keeping the gas pedal depressed while the clutch is in and you are shifting.... You have to be mad fast I imagine because I really don't want to listen to my car hit the rev limiter. I did that once and it scared the shit outta me. I really appeciate the help. Thanks.

Do not keep the gas pedal depressed while using the clutch, you will fry the springs on the friction plate. In other words it is a costly and time consuming mistake. Power shifting involves matching the engines RPM's to the speed of the gearing, without using the clutch. Cars today have synchros, that help make the mesh of gear switching easier, but older makes did not have synchros and relied on a good RPM to make this transition. Its not a good idea to do this on cars involving synchros. The synchros cannot match the strength of the pegs that match the gears together, and that will cause a grinding noise. On older cars that did not have synchros, this was a popular method, but if your looking only to make a couple tenths on your honda, but something to make more power, don't destroy your transmission. are you talking about double clutching maybe? I don't know why you would ever try to shift keepin the gas pedal in, knowing the simple mechanics of engine/transmission is enough to prove its a no-no. Double Clutching, im pretty sure, is when you shift you keep the revs up while the clutch is pressed in. But this is a very over-rated method (thanx to F&F) and doenst really make a diff. As far as I know, just shifting as fast as you can the "normal" way is the quickest way.

Powershifting is when you shift without using the clutch pedal. At a certain RPM you can just push it into a higher gear without even having to push in the clutch. Double clutching is when you need to put the car into neutral and then go into a higher gear (only on old cars with no syncros). If you do a search you'll find tons of threads describing both of these things in detail (think there is a few in the nonspecific forum).

Both are useless on your car basically.
