I need some help with the outside door handle on my kids 2000 Grand Am. The handle opens the door fine but the trim that sits around it is hanging. How does it attach to the body? I'm assuming I'm going to have to remove the door panel to get access but what kind of fastener should I be looking for??? Thanks!!!

I'm not sure of your exact setup, but I'm assuming it's simliar to mine. You'll need to remove the interior door panel (it will involve removing the switch panels, removing the tray thing behind the interior handle, removing the screw in the grip column thing, and the screw behind the relfector). Peel away the plastic covering the door cavity, and lay it carefully with the polyeurothane side up. You will be able to look in and see the back of the outside handle up in the corner of the cavity. You'll have to see what you need to do from there, but you're first step will be to remove the door panel. You should be able to figuire that out by ear.

If it is a plastic trim piece it may just snap in place. I know that several cars and trucks have plastic trim behind the door handle, I'm not sure about your set up but if it is there should be tabs around the outside of the trim that catch on the door panel when pushed in. Check this first but you may have to get at it from inside like Ridenour says.
Hope this helps.

It is plastic. I tried to push it back into place withno luck. I'll probably just pull it apart. My kid said it's a good excuse to put new speakers in.

He's right, now would be the time to put new speakers in but by doing that you now have to take off both interior door panels. To repair the handle trim you will need to take that door apart, you are going to have to disconnect the handle to get the trim behind it. But I think it just snaps in place. Watch your speaker size, I put in new ones and had to modify the grills. Good Luck.
