Jumpy Windshield Wipers

When in intermittent mode, my wipers do the cha-cha (or stop altogether). I read somewhere that grease builds up somewhere on the contacts and cleaning off the grease makes for normal operation. Can anyone tell me what to clean?
Or maybe it's a lever-switch problem. Is this a common issue?

Actually the issue is the grease used on the mechanical pivots.
The white lithium grease dryes out and then the movement is erratic.
It is a real pain to remove the cowl and the wiper arm linkage.
Good luck,

I have a similar problem with my wipers. The wipers really drag on the low setting especially when the winshield is dry and I've just hit the wiper switch by accident, and which is often because it's located too close to the steering wheel.
I'm going to see if I can get a long lubricant spray nozzle in at the wiper linkage joints.
