Hey guys, i found a sweet deal on an 85 300zx Turbo, but its automatic.
So, if i could get my hands on a 5spd could it be swapped it? has anyone ever done this? i figure if i did, it would be a good chance to rebuild the transmission and install a new clutch and flywheel.
Thanks.
Also, is this a 2+2? http://www.buysell.com/showad.asp?id=35502041

Ok, swapping transmissions is quite simple, but there are quite a few things you will need other than the transmission itself.
Just off the top of my head, you will need:
Clutch pedal assembly, manual brake pedal (its smaller), clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, clutch piping, transmission (obviously), transmission crossmember, manual driveshaft, shifter-boot and plate.

That should be about all you need, but it is a rather big job. Take your time because you don't want to screw up anything, especially mucking about with the pedals.

It looks to me like a 2 seater. An easy way to tell the difference is that the 2 seaters have triangular rear windows, whereas 2+2s have 4 sided rear windows.

yeah, like mikeman said, it is definitely doable and not that hard to do, especially if the motor is out but you will find it very time consuming. if you look on ebay, almost everytime i get on, there is soemone selling a 5-speed converison kit, that they have pieced together with spare parts. also, may want to check out z31.com for alot more details. good luck!!!

where are you??? the 2+2 was only offered in N/A in the states so i think that a turbo most be a 2 seater....

Eh i see so many 2+2 turbos down here, all engine-swapped it would seem. It seems to be a very popular swap.

Eh. Kinda rareish. I might see 1 or 2 a fortnight. Most people don't seem to know what they are (but have heard of them).

Ummmmm what about the ECU, starter. flywheel, clutch. Also check to see if the pilot bearing or bushing is the same......My bet is that its not. Often an overlooked part doing these swaps on most cars.

ECU? As far as I knew the auto and manual ECUs were the same. The auto just had a small transmission controller in the boot though.
I'm also assuming that the clutch is going to come with the transmission seeing as mine did when I swapped it in.

Well according to my research they are not the same. There is a different part number for the manual and automatic. manual tranny (http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker/?UseCase=C001&UserAction=answerRequiredQuestion&Parameters=%7C%7EWITH+FEDERAL+EMISSION&PageSync=5)
auto tranny (http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker/?UseCase=C001&UserAction=answerRequiredQuestion&Parameters=%7C%7EWITH+FEDERAL+EMISSION&PageSync=8)

the automatic ECU will work for the manual tranny but the manual ECU will not work with an auto tranny. the auto tranny just has a couple extra wires, which if was switched to a manual tranny would be extra useless wires.

actually they were realesed as 2+2 turbos. Thats why you are seeing so many of them.

and im pretty sure the 2+2 NA was the only one you could by in Australia too.

How about just painting a 5 speed shift pattern on the shift knob and be done with it?

Just thinking!!!!!!sorry, trying to make it simple.

I don't why everyone is so damn picky about having a damn MT! If it's AT keep it that way! make it a drag-car!

Shit... it wasn't until F&F showed up and now everyone wants a stick!

Jorge...first boost envy, now shifter envy. for a fun sporty GT car, a manual transmission is necessary, for me atleast. makes it a driver's car...now if you have 1500hp, i dont think a manual is a good idea.

few extra wires? that's too much weight.. get the manual ECU, saves weight!

Damn I've learned so much here. My cars are boring and if I have 1,500HP then it's ok to have a automatic. I don't find my cars boring, but I don't think they have 1,500HP, so I guess I'm a pussy.

It's got wheels? Throttle? That's all you need to have fun... you like MT. Fine by me! I woud just find a car with MT rather than going through the hassle of converting an AT to MT. That money can be better spent on good mods!

yeah, now your getting what im saying, PUSSY!!!! just joking Al. your car is probaby not boring, but you also have paddle shifters so you dont count. georgy is the lazy one that is always cruising around with his cell phone in one hand and his other hand on the wheel. :D theres not enough driver involvement for me...hell im putting the Zemulator system in my car so i can be even more involved. thats what seperates a man from a weenie!!! just joking Jorge...i dont care if you have an auto, im just saying for me, i want a manual. just different preferences. an auto actual makes sense in a Z because it is a "GRAND TOURING" car. just have fun fellas!!!

as for saving my money for upgrades instead of doing a manual swap...why would i want to spend money upgrading something i dont really want??? :D

Sigh... I'm gonna have to smack you, Jason... LoL. I don't talk on the phone while driving and I always have my hands on the wheel! BOTH! You boner! I don't have anything against MT, guys... I just think it's over-hyped~! "I gotta have an MT or I will be uncool!" I mean I love MT cars too... but I'm not trying to impress anyone. I know I can drive (probably out drive alot of people while I'm at it!) MT and tha's all that matters. You want me to be honest, guys? If I had the option to pick my same exact Z with AT or MT... I'd probably pick MT. But as they say: " Shake what your mama gave you!" I have no prob driving/modding an AT powered car!

...and Jason: I wasn't reffering "You should save your money and do other upgrades instead"... c'mon, man! You're my boy! I know full well you are swapping a VG30DETT/MT! I stand by you on that one, kiddo!

ok Georgy...i see your point. there is alot of hype about i gotta have a manual transmission and those same kids have never driven a manual trans before and they get in t and kill it everytime that start from a complete stop and they have been driving it for 2 years. and if i picked out my car again i definitely would have waited and got a 2-seater/5-speed in charcoal gray (DREAM CAR!!!)...but yeah whatever...

and that point about me swapping trans...i was just making a point that, why spend money on modding a car that you dont like completely. start modding after getting it the way you wanted. i was just using myself as an example...i wish i wouldnt have gotten in that accident because if i didnt have a fresh paint job i would probably be sanding my car and taking it some place to get it painted Z32 charcoal silver, like westpak's Z32!!!

Weight problems? Shit! Put that fat girl on a diet! Get rid of that spare, and other crap in the back, rear seats, all that plastic in the back, some nice carbon/kevlar seats, 10-12 gallon fuel cell and you are set, baby! Leaves alotta room for a NOS kit in the back too! Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

yeah but if i did all that to a 2-seater i would still weigh less than the 2+2 on the diet...and i like my seats. the spare and all that is gone except the plastic and carpet...

i think when i get ready im gonna take out the back seats and make it kinda look like the 2 seater wall but facing the rear is gonna be 2 12" woofers and an amp and then facing the front is just gonna be a storage compartment like the 350z's and then behind the speaker box will just be my normal hatch whatever is left, so i still ahve room for groceries and things. gotta have boot space...
