D16Z6 Question

Anyone know how hard it is to put a D16Z6 into a CRX and what is all needed. I have a friend who has a 91 CRX Si. he is also wondering if he can use his stock tranny since both the motors are d series because he needs a cable tranny instead of the hydraulic that the D16Z6 would come with. Are any mounts needed?.....just anything that is needed if you could tell me that would be great. Thanks again.:D

Not sure about the installation of the D16Z6 but what I have been told any B-series motor will work with a with B-series tranny as well as for the D-series Motor will work with any D series tranny. You canot use a D with a B or vice versa. Correct me if I am wrong.

I already knew about the B series and D series trannies not bolting up together but yea u are right. I guess i just need to know a easier way to hook up VTEC and what is all needed there. I dont think I want to spend $350 for a Apex-i VTEC controller. All replies help. Thanks.

im the wiring would be made easy by hasport or zdyne

Do you mean the Zdyne one wire VTEC? I was wondering about that. Does anyone have any information or a page that has the complete swap of a D16Z6 into a CRX Si? Thanks.

...you've got to use an 88-91 tranny and 88-91 engine mount for the swap to work....putting the engine in is simple...no more difficult than putting the stock engine in...
as for wiring, you have a few options, the best being wiring for OBD1 so you can use the p28 ecu which is the correct ecu for the swap and will give you the best results IMO. this can be easily done w/ an adapter harness which are pretty cheap.... email this guy @ [email protected] and he'll make you one for a decent price...dont buy the place or ard or whoever's harness...way too $$$...or the interior harness plugs can be replaced and repinned for OBD1 plugs...check this page out for that info...

....second best would buying the zdyne one-wire ecu ..then the worst (cheapest) being using the stock si ecu w/ some kind of vtec controller
www.zdyne.com
...the cheapest/easiest way of doing this is gettin an RPM activated switch and a relay and wiring it up to the vtec solenoid....you can make this method better by getting a fields or apexi unit instead and you'll be able to modify the fuel maps for the bigger cam lobes....

I did the swap just a few months ago, but unfortunately didnt even get it started before it was stolen....

Thanks so much marked001. All that stuff helped me out so much. You're the shiznit man.:D

you need a VTEC ECU.. simply getting an aftermarket VTEC controller will not work well
the VTEC controller only works on half of the system.. it controls the rocker arm locking
what the VTEC controller DOES NOT control are the different fuel and ignition maps associated with the high rpm lobe. you need the VTEC ECU for this

no sohc vtec ecu will work with my OBD0 setup. That's why they say to use the PM6 ecu and get a RPM switch or get a VTEC controller. I really dont feel like totally wiring up every single wire back up the VTEC ecu just to get it to run. I want it to be plain and simple.

yes, but in doing so you will get the VTEC cam lobe, but not the VTEC fuel and ignition maps
which basically means you wont be utillizing the full potential of it
for the trouble of doing a D16Z6 swap you would be better of doing a B16A anyway

It's not that much trouble. The B16A runs about $1600 with everything while i got this block for $200 and can bolt my tranny right up to it. Anyways, anyone else have any opinions? Oh and also, is there a better ECU that will plug right in rather than the PM6 ECU having the fuel cutout at 6800? I know shadowboy said to get a VTEC ECU but which one should i get and how hard would it be to wire everything up to the ECU? Thanks.

I say just get an rpm activated switch, use your stock si ecu and chip it for better fuel and ignition maps, it will also allow for a higher redline. that's what i plan on doing anyway!

or just get a zdyne one-wire ECU
it will use the factory harnesses and have built-in VTEC capability

Yea i just ended up buying one of those from Summitracing.com and im gonna send my ECU to get it rechipped to Jet Performance. Thanks for all the help tho.;)

..email the guy I posted prior and spend the $125 on an adapter harness and use the p28 ecu....might as well do it right...it'll be plug and play...just as easy as using a vtec controller...and you wont have to rig your distributor up... I forgot about that, the 88-91 distributor doesnt exactly bolt up to the z6 head..

I already ordered the RPM switch from summit racing or else i wouldve done the P28 ecu with the wire harness. as for the distributor..you can use some washers to make it fit onto the Z6 head. I think this motor might be comming with a Distributor anyways so yeah. Thanks for the help tho.

If i get a z6 distributor and swap my a6 distributor out, will it fit (and operate) without any modification???

the OBD1 distributor will not work with the OBD0 ecu... so, no.
