Hi,
Has anyone ever tried to remove the torque convertor on a 99 blazer 4x4? My book says remove the inspection pan and disconnect convertor
but I have no inspection pan and it looks like I might have to remove the oil pan. The only other way I could possibly see was through the starter opening but not very much room.
Any advice?
Thanks in advance
Mike

There is a cast inspection cover under the torque convertor. There are six bolts (15mm head) holding it on. You will have to persuade the trans cooler lines out of the way. The front driveshaft is in the way of one of the bolts. You might have to drop the exhaust pipe to get it out.

Why would you want to remove it?
It's a pain to take out. IF your tranny is acting funny, the converter aint the first thing I would think about.

First off, may I ask why you are removing it?
What problems are you having?

Hi,
Have had the transmisson fail, suspect the sun retainer (no reverse, 2nd or 4th). Mostly done except for the above mentioned.
Thanks for the input, will carry on later.

The entire transmission must be removed. The 99 4L60E transmission on a 4x4 has a one piece torque convertor housing, there is only a small (about 2") inspection hole. Here's what has to come out/off.
> Disconnect all wiring harnesses, shift cable on the trans, and vacuum vent hose on the transfer case.
>Rear driveshaft.
>Exhaust pipe to the muffler.
>Transfer case.
>Front driveshaft
>Transmission crossmember.
>Starter. The three bolts that retain the torque convertor to the flywheel are accessed through the starter hole.
>Support the engine since the trans. acts as the rear engine mount. The oil pan is NOT removed.
>Trans oil cooler lines.
>The top left trans to engine bolt can not be removed without raising the body off the frame about 4" due to very little clearance to body sheet metal so remove the five left side body mount bolts and raise the body. The other top two trans to engine bolts can be reached with long extensions along the top of the transmission. There are nine bolts securing the trans to the engine. Now you can lower the trans on a floor jack and replace the torque convertor.
I just replaced the trans on my 2000 after reverse failed.
This is a major project, safety is a huge concern since you're working directly under a 4000+ lb truck. Make certain the torque convertor is in fact the problem. This is WAY too much work only to find the problem is elsewhere.

Thanks for the info,
I think the problem is with sun gear retainer (from forum messages of common symptoms) and was only removing the torque convertor as part of the transmission removal.
Maybe I should take to the shop?
