is a thermostat needed in a 944? is it needed for proper fuel management? and is there a way to erase the codes in the computer and start fresh

yes, a thermostat is needed for the fuel injection to operate correctly. it is in the top of the lower radiator hose. it is difficult to change, you will need a pair of 90 degree snap ring pliers and a mirror. your car should run between the normal marks on the temp gauge all the time. if there is no thermostat, the car will run rich all the time and not perform well or get very good fuel mileage. as for the car storing a code, my service manual says the codes are erased every time you turn the key off. the codes are read at the plug on the left side of the engine compartment in front of the fuse box, but you need a porsche reader to read them. the tool has a switch that shorts two of the terminals together and two led lights, one that lights up when the switch is on and the other that flashes the code.

Sorry, I seem a little vage about this, I'm more use to older muscle cars? I bought this for my son, 4-cylinder, small car, gas mileage, and different, what could be better? but putting a 20 year old in a porsche? lets just say insurance loved me? anyway he has enough of the car, and its problems( he needs an everyday driver, for school and work) we've had to replace starter, clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, clutch master cylinder, and slave cylinder, (all were original) but I guess when it started running hot? he had had enough? The bad part is I like the car, its a blast to drive, and although it dosen't have the thrill of standing on a 400 horse 64 Gto, it is a nice weekend toy, so I'm trying to keep it and play with it when I can? It started running hot off and on, and after everything else, I removed the thermostate(in pieces) and it runs cool, but now it runs rich? I've got a new thermostat, and when I can get to it (its in his mothers garage) I'll let you know what happens? thanks to all of you for your help.
