Engine Lockup

Is it typical that your engine can lock up with no type of warning. On friday the car was running fine until I went into my daughters school and when I tried to start the car it did nothing. The radio still worked. All I heard was a clicking sound when i turned on the ignition. My battery is new and It would not take a jump. I thought it was the starter but it was not. My mechanic says that the engine may have locked up  Has anyone ever had this problem and please tell me that it's not the engine.

e.mccoy,
In order to help, we will need the Year, Engine Size, Model, and type of transmission i.e. manual or automatic.
"The radio still worked." Is that the only component that worked..?
"All I heard was a clicking sound when i turned on the ignition. My battery is new and It would not take a jump." What happened when you tried to jump start it, just the clicking sound, and no difference.?
"I thought it was the starter but it was not." How do you know it is NOT the starter?
The more information you can provide, the better chance we have of 'pinpointing' the problem.

Thanks Alvin

I have a 1997 Ford escort 1.9 liter engine and a automatic transmission. When i tried to start the car everything seemed to work inside the car blowers, radio, etc. But all i heard is the same clicking sound. When i tried to jump it off nothing changed. The same one click as i turned the key. And i went and bought a used starter from a reputable shop and it was tested before i bought it. And after the mechanic put the starter on same thing. He even took the original starter to a shop to have it tested and nothing was wrong with that one.

Do you have a Test Light or a Voltmeter? It will take a little bit of troubleshooting to find the source of the problem.
When you have the heater blower, headlight etc. ON and you try to start the engine doesn't the blower slow down, or the headlights dim?

Actually if your car is a 1997 then it has a 2.0 liter engine.

You may have a dead cell in ur battery, so ur relay is popping cause there's not enough juice. Turn off ALL accessories and try it. Clean your battery terminals as much as humanly possibly, and not just the bettery, the clamps on the leads too.
