Ok, lets see if I can explain this. Do you know the muffler tips with the blue tip. It looks like it would get too hot and discolor to that blue tint. They make them for tuners. How would you go about getting that? Anyone ever tried?
thanks

Its called heat staining. I believe you paint over a chrome exhaust tip with clear blue to achieve this look

somebody made a tutorial on that by using a torch (or a lighter, but takes longer) and radio antenna i believe then dip it in cold water after it gets super hot and it does that then trim it to the blue part, but make sure you clean all the oils like finger prints and things off of it with rubbing alcohaul first so that it doesnt show in the heat stain

It is far easier and safer to use clear blue paint.

The Hiroboy solution is the best. but you can use Clear blue and Clear orange with an airbrush to get similar result.

I made one on my Civic. I didnt heat anything up, but i made a shading effect on Photoshop and printed it onto a clear decal. It looks rather convincing and is easier than heating metal. Oh and I put carbonfiber on it too.

Titanium and a torch is my favorite solution. Maybe when I get my lathe, I can make a few.

but if you cant get or afford titanium tubing, radio antenna is the cheapest solution

out of curiousity, how much heat does it take to actually heat stain a real muffer? a friend of mine has a muffler thats a little bit grey on the tip, but not much.

A good bit, but it depends on material, thickness, and size. The blue to purple to yellow is called HAZ, Heat Affected Zone. With a large exhaust tip, the heat disapates much quicker, and in a larger area, therefore the HAZ is much smaller.

When TIG/MIG/Arc welding, you can see the HAZ spread when doing a tack. When Grinding, the HAZ will spread, but much slower, and in a lot smaller area. So on and so forth...I could go on for hours probably.

If you heat it up till it glows red on the very end, then it'll cool with the coloured marks. So a real exhaust tip would never get hot enough to colour up under driving conditions.

Unless your flame thrower kit gets stuck. :icon16:

Very light coat of thinned down clear blue should give you the look you are after.

I looked on alot of pics and picked the best way to make the fade. Since most I saw weren't all blue, i decided to go this way. So i started with a blank document and used a high resolution around 300-600 or so. Created the first color and thenstarted selecting sections and airbrushing the new color over it. I eventually got the right fade. An easier way is to find a good pic and copy paste and make a long ribbon of a section of the muffler. I can't really show, but hopefully this helps a bit, I'll see if I can find my oirginal and post it.
