annoying warning melody

I am trying to get rid of that sound that comes on when you open the driver side door while key is in the ignittion. It starts to get to me. The sound comes from under the dashboard.

does anyone know what can be done about it? Please help me out.

Forgot to mention the model:
1997 VW Golf GTI 2.0L 4cyl. 2-door.

It's a relay on the fuse panel & can be pulled out w/o major consequences. remove the cover above the driver's feet & open the door with the key in the ignition. the relay has a speaker grill & can be easily identified.

be careful after it is out i left have left my lights on a bunch after i did that and almost killed my battery.

For some reason, the dinging sound doesn't stop going until a full 5 mins of starting the car.. what causes that?? The remote stopped working (used to lock the car doors) at the same time and some of the internal lights (on the bottom of the door) will not go off - is this what was happening to you??

I did not have any problems yet since i removed the realy.

Gtigrrlatx, your 2001 has a very different system. It sounds like the door latch switch is failing, unfortunately it has to be bought with the latch mechanism.
