trans problem

i have 95 talon non turbo with a 98 non turbo engine in it. last week the trans stopped going in to drive. i can change to rev., drive and the 2 low gears but the car only moved in rev. today i went out and it will drive in all gears. any idea why one day i only have reverse and the next day i have all the gears? also i have a small amount of white smoke coming out of my exhaust with some water . the car has been sitting for 2 years , any idea why.

My guess is because it's been sitting for two years.....
Whenever a car sits for longer periods of time the seals can dry up and condensation can build up also...
When was the last oil change? If it's been two years...change it and it probably wouldn't hurt to do the tranny also....

Is it an auto or manual?
