Gas consumption horrible please help!!!!

I have a 1997 ford escort lx with 32 000 km only on it and I only get about 380 km per full tank of gas. I think that is horrible since everyone I talk to that has the same year and make say that they get closer to 620 to 650 km per tank and the reviews for the ford escort say its amazing on gas what is the problem pls help.

My check engin light is also on and will not go off. I have changed the gas cap and the oxigen sensors and spark plugs, and air filter. I want to know what could be wrong with it. Also when i start my car the first 5 to 10 seconds the exaust is almost black then clears up. Whats wrong???

It sounds like you are having problems with the car running rich. If you are going to cure the problem you need to have the computer scanned to get the codes so that you can track down the culprit. If you can get the computer scanned and then post the codes we should be able to help you repair the car.

ok thanks i will get the code asap cuz its a pain knowing i am short over 100 km per tank.
