Silverado fuel pump replacement

I've got a 1999 Silverado p/u with a failing fuel pump. (Sounds like I have a turbo in the mid section?) I'm told I have to replace the sensors, filter housing, etc at a cost of $400 bucks. Before I pull the tank, I'd like to know if I have an option of replacing just the pump. The dealer says no! Help.

not sure, but on my '97 I was able to just do the pump. call around and see if you can buy just the pump. if so, I'd say you can replace just the pump. Be sure to run your tank dry, it'll be a lot easer to drop. FYI my pump was about $60.

Thanks fo rthe info. I was told that since I have the new style body and the (5.3L), the pre-1999 isn't the same! My '95 was only $58!! But the dealer is $483 and the auto parts want $376 (no labor!!). Can't figure out what the big deal is. Seems I should be able to replace only the pump but I don't want my truck to be down too long. I was hoping to find out my options before I pull the tank!!

You can just replace the pump. But it's still expensive.

I can get you just the roller vane pump rebuild kit for $70 (includes: pump, flexable fuel tube for discharge, strainer filter for pump suction
).

Hi. Do you know how involved changing just the pump is on my truck? GM said I shouldn't even consider changing just the pump and that's why they don't sell just the pump. They also said they can't even tell me what pump I need! They say I either have a TCF or a TCU. Does the kit you can get me fit either? Thanks for your feedback, Sid.

It's easier than changeing spark plugs. The time consuming part is taking the tank out. My AC delco parts guy, will set u up with the correct pump depending on you engine "VIN" #. This is NOT a aftermarket pump! It's a OEM delco.

It is really not that bad In my case I was told my truck backfiring was caused from the fuel pump and I didnt want to pay all that money also. So I bought one off ebay for about $100. I took the bed off the truck it was only like 8 bolts with 2 guys helping me lift off the bed and replaced it. But then my problem was still there so no I have a fuel pump laying around in case it does "Really" go bad. But thats the direction I would go.

Recently replaced the pump of my 2001 5.3L Extended Cab 1500, lots of opinions but the problem core was the pump, my pump did not sound near what you are telling, the truck just didn't accelerate as required/usual, computer told there was a lean fuel mixture (lots of air & little fuel). Get an OEM pump if that is your real problem, forget the turbo noise (mine always sounds like that when the tank is almost empty), go to AcDelco site and find your pump #. My pump # is MU 1089, costs me $170 (OEM) delivered to Puerto Rico, to replace it I removed the pickup bed (8 bolts with an electric impact ratchet, remove ground wire, fuel filling hose, lighting wiring plugs, spare tire, bumper is optional), then washed the bed, chassis, diff., tank, and finally painted w/ rust prot. black the chassis, diff. and some suspension components. Pump replacement took 10 minutes, whole bed assembly 45 minutes, now looks like new and the problem is finally gone. At last, I filled the tank and added Techtron fuel injector cleaner, when the tank emptied, the fuel filter was replaced.

If you don't want your truck underwear cleaned, just remove the tank if you have proper tools and remember to change the filter.
