I am having trouble with my wifes e30 318. Any one have ideas. it is an 85' in the cold it runs sooo rough, until it reaches operating temp. then it runs like a brand new bimmer. I had all the electrical changed and the furl system cleaned. The air and fuel filter are good. the only thing i can think of is the air idle ajust(but that wuold be constant) or a cold weather intake. help? it is a great car only 80k miles.

If the car is only running "rough" when it's cold it most likely isn't the air/idle adjustment, as you stated, that should be constant. It sounds like it isn't running "rich" enough when the engine is cold. I don't know much about BMW's and when they went to computer controlled fuel injection, but it appears that your computer isn't "sensing" the water/coolant temperature properly and adusting the air/fuel mixture accordingly. On modern electronic fuel injected cars the computer will run in a cold start mode until the coolant reaches operating temperature (on a "cold" engine the pistons aren't actually round, as they "heat" up they become round and the piston rings then "seal" the cylinder from "blow by"), then as it "senses" the engine (coolant) is "hot' enough, it monitors the air/fuel mixture to match incoming air (mass air meter) and adjusts the mixture to optimum ratio for performance and economy (also emissions). I'm not sure if this will help you any but it may be a place to start. Good luck.
