Alternator Repair

Okay, I had my alternator checked out and the machine at AutoZone spit out a "bad diode" message. I'm exploring 2 avenues of approach here:

1) what else out there used the 6VD1 engine? Will it have the same alternator and can it be swapped out for my busted one?

2) Can I take this thing apart, clean it up, lube it up, whatever, and get it back to working order-at least for the short-term?

I suppose I have a third option- I heard that if you disconnect the ground strap on ther alternator, the output will max out. If it's already not producing what it should be, and I do that, can I get by for the weekend and not fry the car's electrical systems?

Just have a family emergency that requires me to get my tail home and take care of it and I'm not too keen about taking it as-is a couple of hours away, so I'm interested in whatever solution covers me for a few days at most until I can get back and do a real fix.

1. you could buy a used one: www.car-parts.com but you may have the same problems.

2. you would have to take it to a place that will rebuild your alt.

The best way to fix this is to buy an OEM alt. isuzu's don't really like aftermarket alt. But if you want a short term fix I would just install an aftermarket alt, and then get you OEM rebuilt.

Even with a good aptitude for elctronics and the workings inside, plus adequate tools/equipment to do it, can I break the thing down and make necessary checks and then fix the problem when I find it?? I REALLY don't want to foot ANY cash if I can get away with it.....still reeling from the Christmas slam and have a ton of bills right now. Tax time is looming but it ain't a refund yet!!

You will have to find a rebuild kit (I don't even know if one is made). I think your best bet is to purchase an aftermarket one.
