Stupid Questions...

Okay, i am planning on buying a 97' civic cx hatchback tomorrow morning and was just wondering if you guys could give me some information on the stock motor. ( Hp, Tq, vtec, non vtec? i dont know jack about the older honda motors and have been looking all morning with no luck). im buying the car for 4k and am planning on doing either a B18c or H22 swap ASAP. i already have 2500 set aside, ( not enough i know) but how far off in reality? and what motor would you reccomend? OH yes, and i have been checking prices and am i just crazy but why are H22 motors like half the price of B18c's? if im correct the H22's have 200Hp while the b18's only pump out 170... why are they more money??? well anyways thanks a lot for any help. -kc P.S. any stock 1/4 mile times for the 97 cx would be great thanks, and just for kicks... what do you think would win in the 1/4...a 94' auto accord ex four door.... or the 1997 civic cx 5spd?

CX hatch has a D16Y7. 106hp 103 lb/ft torque non-VTEC.

The reason H22s are so cheap is because there isn't a demand for them. It actually takes a bit of fabricating and cutting to get them to fit right, and even then the way they sit in the engine bay throws of your car's handling a bit.

So even though a B series motor is more expensive, it'll drop in with out a problem where as with the H22 you can probably plan on spending a good $500 or so more to get that thing in there.

CX 1/4 mile time, my guess would be in the high month range lol. Realistically I would say about 19 secs. You would get your ass handed to by any Accord.

a b18c1 engine swap should run about..
engine 3000 (more or less depending on the condition of the engine)

swap labor-500-1000 (again depending on were you get it done and who you know)

xtra's 500. stuff breaks you should have 500 handy just because.

so more or less $4000 USD.

He'd need the stock B18 mounts and a 99-00 Civic Si rear transmission mount.... so no, not really an issue.

My car still has a Y7, and it's not quite a 19 second car :iceslolan
I actually run low 17's all day long.... considering he's looking at buying a CX, which is even lighter than my DX, he's got a little weight advantage.

Also, remember... with an H22a swap, you lose your A/C (of course, most CX's didn't come with A/C or power steering to begin with) but even if you wanted to add those in, there's no room in the engine bay for it.
The H22 is the cheaper engine, but you can look at paying about double for labor to get it to fit and running correctly.

Also take into mind, you could get a B16A for even cheaper than a B18C, and there's not really much noticable power difference between the two (they're both fast engines)

Or if u kno someone that will do ur swap for cheaper go that way.

I'd say go with a h22a swap because more torque and hp and you'll run low 13's
