Test Drive

ok.. so i recently test drove a 1988 Honda CRX HF, this car had some mods and when i test drove it, it was terrible. 1) it rattled reallly bad 2) the transmition felt really wierd, i was in 1st and going 30 mph when the engine was @ 5k rpm. is this a performance tranny or something?

Also it was VERY slow. it ran through 1st like it was in 3rd, i'm pretty sure it had the stock motor in it, is this normal acceleration? or is there a problem i should be worried about if i buy this car.

they are asking $1250 for the car. please give me some advise on what to do b 4 i buy it. thx

Mods that i could see: Cold air intake, aftermarket rims, exaust, and maybe the tranny.

The motor in the HF is the d15b6, and the tranny is geared for good fuel mileage not performance. As for the rattling I have had 2 crx's and am on my 4 88-91 hatch and they all rattled. Oh and the Hf motor has only 62hp and depending on what size wheels are on it could also slow it down. Find out what tranny is in the car. Also if you have more than 1200 to spend there is a hf with a zc on ebay for 1500. Look at the rear quarters ,check for rust. I bought my current hatch for 250 dallors and I just got my new weld rear quarters for 100, plus 300 to install, perfect body for $650. just things to look at.

On a HF you shouldn't have it in 1st gear going 30, you should already be nearing 3rd. I know my Civic wails if I get it up to even close to 20 in first. Same when I get up to 35ish in second.

The CRX HF model was made for good gas milage.The tranny is geared to keep the RPMs low. I have a buddy that ran his at the track and at the end of the 1/4 mile he was still in 2nd gear :iceslolan The car is also lighter than the other CRX models. The bad the bad thing about that is some of the things that they did to make the car lighter(smaller brakes,no sway bar and cheap seats) should be upgraded if you want a performance car.

i think that price is too high, unless the body and other things are in perfect condition. If they aren't, try going for $800 and the money you'd save you can spend on upgrades and/or fixing problems

just above the rear wheel wells there is some rust, otherwise the body is perfect, the spoiler is loose, but that's fixable. and the bra is tearing a little on the front.

I also forgot to mention that the hood takes two people to open it.... i didn't look why it wouldn't. there is also a glove that's right, a glove between the cold air intake and the battery to they don't touch.

A question about the rust is it surface or is it actually eating away the quarters. I would take the bra off, and check for rust, My last crx had a oem bra and when i removed it there was tons of rust from water being trapped. I would try and get them down in price like ice_x said. Also the glove is to keep the positive terminal from touching the intake, but there are tons of better ways to go about it.

one thing u have to realize too is the area where the car is being sold...higher in some areas for ur average 4th gen
