Gross or net?

I've been doing some reading on the camaro and the changes in its 35 year history. One thing puzzles me though, Are the power ratings taken at the wheels or at the crank? If they are taken at the wheels, how much do the 4th gen LT1 and LS1 cars have at the wheels? And how wide are the rear wheels? Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure they're all taken at the crank...that's why when dyno'ed, they put out less hp due to power loss through the drivetrain.

The power rating of engines is based on flywheel power and almost every car has different drivetrain loss so it would depend on what the power to the wheels is but most Manuals lose 10-15 percent threw drivetrain and most auto's lose 20-25 percent which is a huge improvment tho. Some auto cars years ago were found to be losing as much as 40 percent threw drivetrain. Prior to 71 I think it was they measured horsepower slightly different. It was still measured at the flywheel but they measure the power without accessorys or full exhaust. So not only were you losing power from drivetrain but you were losing power to back pressure and sparstic power accessory lose at well.

I do believe the LS1s were underrated, I hear lots of reports of stock LS1 Camaros and Firebirds dynoing near or even slightly above 300 to the wheels when they're supposedly 310-315 at the crank. As for raer wheels... um, stock I think around 8 inches? give or take 1/2 inch, my rims are off an LT1 z28 and I run 245's.

Damn, only 8"? Must be easy to loose traction in first and second, if your launching do you have to lay off the gas to keep from spinning?

True i mean i just dynoed yesterday and i posted it. U can see i made a hair over 300hp at the wheels. Yea and i don't ever remember a camro being DOHC.

No DOHC camaros that I know of, and also the traction thing depends bigtime on your tires. My old ones i could stomp on it and go, the ones i have now i gotta start lightly otherwise they (well, it lol) just spin(s). I have a 3.8 but still.

I heard that 93 z28's were rated at the wheels officially, but I havn't heard anything else.

I'm almost 100% sure that Camaros never came with DOHC engines. Camaros and Firebirds come with pushrod engines. I've always been proud of that considering how many foreign companies don't use pushrod engines.

a lot of manufacturers underrate the power ratings on some of their more performance oriented cars for insurance reasons. in japan, you cant find a car rated with more than 275 horsepower cause of a gentleman's agreement between manufacturers. ofcourse many of the cars have more but the are underrated.

They actualy recently lifted that.

yeah I heard that too...now the rumors are rumbling about a concept supra and gtr, supposed to have large amounts of power with insane price tags gtr-80 g's supra-100-150 g's....
