84 Celica timing help

I just rebuilt the 22R block with EFI ( cylinder honed, bearings, new pistons,etc).
When the engine is running it idles and runs real rough. I tried to set the timing to 8 degrees BTDC to which it dies at that point ( appx 10 BTDC) so I left it at 20 BTDC where it runs but rough.
Before attempt to time it I disconnected the vacuum advance diaphram and plugged the hoses.
I have no vacuum leaks anywhere that I could see. I searched.
Now for the question;
Could 1 notch off on the cam spocket make it run like that?
If so, should it be counter or clockwise turn? ( the cam sprocket mark will not allign perfect, it has to favor one side or the other from TDC. The chain is new. Sprocket looks in good shape. Very little wear.
Crank is alligned perfect on TDC.
What else could it be?
Any help will be appreciated.

Check your idle and set the timing to 16 the factory set is 10 but who wants theres.

Appreciate the input but the idle has been checked and rechecked. At 16 BTDC when you press the gas pedal it sounds like a diesel ( clicking).

what type of clicking? I haven't had time to check my celica out (haven't been driving it lately) but I think I have a few loose valves which makes the bugger have an extremely rough idle when cold, smooths out a bit after a really long time, but still pretty rough.

The kind of clicking you hear when your timing is too advanced. You especially hear it when you are driving and shift gears on a standard ( high rev).

Next time you rebuild an engine make sure your harness plugs are properly connected to the injectors, lol. Car runs fine now. At proper timing. The #2 injector plug had somehow been disconnected.
