Tachometer with a mind of its own.

My 95 G20t has a tachometer that has a mind of its own. It will either, a) not work at all, b) work part of the time with intermitent drops and spikes, or c) work fine. Anyone have this kinda of issue before? How hard is it to enter the instrument cluster and take a look?

My girlfriend had this problem after I..er...well...tried to put white gauges on her Civic. The problems are that I put the needle in about 2000RPM retarded, so it doesn't move until you get to 2000RPM, and it also sticks a little so it will jump a few hundred RPM intermittently. I also did it with the speedo, temp and gas gauges, but those are different stories all together. It was really easy getting into the gauge cluster, but once you get there you're on your own. Good luck, man.

it may be your distributor??? just a thought because thats where the tach gets its info from.....if you havent done any mods to your cluster, then i am 95% sure that its your distributor,......put a known working distributor and try it out....good luck

You can also get out a multimeter, find the tach wire, and watch for AC on it you should get a reading between 1 and 5v as you rev (IIRC) I'ts been a while since I've installed......
